Since the reveal trailer at the 2021 Game Awards, Wonder Woman has been one of the most anticipated games for superhero fans. Apart from the teaser trailer shown three years ago, Monolith Productions' feature of the Wonder Woman announcement teaser again at the top of their official website is the most significant update for the Wonder Woman game we’ve seen in the past three years. We’ve been gathering updates on the game and finally got a decent idea of what the gameplay is going to be like, and it has only heightened my anticipation.

Wonder Woman, Game, Monolith, Female Protagonist

First of all, No, Wonder Woman is not going to be a live-service game. A well-known industry insider provided an in-depth gameplay breakdown after he got the information directly from a developer. In terms of performance, the Wonder Woman game currently runs at 30 FPS, though the developers aim to hit 60 FPS by launch. This is understandable, as the earliest Monolith is expecting the Wonder Woman game to be released in the Fall of 2025, giving the developers ample time to meet that goal. It's reassuring to hear they're considering performance for gamers who are sensitive to anything below 60 FPS—unless it’s a game like Tears of the Kingdom or Middle-earth: Shadow of War.

Graphically, the game is described as an improved version of Gotham Knights, suggesting a grounded and realistic art style for the characters. However, since the game is set in Themyscira, the lighting will be much brighter than the darker tones of Gotham. So, the new Batman & Wonder Woman Games are not taking place in the same universe. As expected, the game will feature mobs, bosses, and mini-bosses, where the Nemesis system will play a significant role similar to the Middle-earth games. Enemies who defeat Diana will grow stronger and gain promotions, while others who survive after being beaten will adapt and hold grudges, leading to more dynamic encounters. It’s a brilliant system that I wish Warner Bros. would incorporate into more of their games.

In terms of progression, Wonder Woman will have multiple skill trees, and loot will be a key component, with players opening chests to find gear for Diana—such as boots, bracers, and torso armor, similar to the God of War Ragnarök. This is reminiscent of Middle-earth: Shadow of War, but hopefully, the gear and progression systems won’t be bogged down by loot boxes or microtransactions as they were in that title.

Fast travel will reportedly be handled via Diana's invisible jet, which I find both amusing and clever, as it saves on animation resources by not needing to display a physical plane. Since Wonder Woman won't fly like Superman, her movement will involve jumping, leaping, and fast dashing, which has been compared to a polished version of Crackdown. This sounds promising, as Wonder Woman should at least be moving like the Incredible Hulk.

The insider also confirmed that the Lasso of Truth will be one of Diana's weapons, functioning similarly to the webs in Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. Players will be able to combo enemies, tie them up, and slam them with the lasso. While there was no confirmation about a truth mechanic, it would be surprising if an interrogation feature wasn’t included, given the depth the Nemesis system offers.

We can expect an official reveal with a new trailer for the Wonder Woman game in December. And she won’t be the only superhero getting the spotlight, as several major upcoming superhero games are also set to release updates and first looks.
