Yooka-RePlaylee HD, a complete remake of Yooka-Laylee, was one of the very first games officially announced to natively support the Nintendo Switch 2. Playtonic Games' better remake of the classic platformer aims to improve and grow the original by adding new content, enhanced gameplay elements, and enhanced graphics. Along with an unnamed Nintendo platform, most likely the future Nintendo Switch 2, Yooka-RePlaylee is scheduled for release in 2025 on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

PM Studios will co-publish the game with Playtonic Friends under joint ownership with Playtonic Games. Gavin Price, CEO of Playtonic Games, said in a news release that the project is a sincere homage to the platformers of the past.

"Yooka-Laylee was our love letter to the golden age of platformers, and Yooka-RePlaylee is a love letter to that love letter", Price said.  Michael Yum, CEO of PM Studios, reiterated his enthusiasm, expressing joy about the cooperation. "It's a pleasure to collaborate with Playtonic in introducing Yooka-RePlaylee to platformer fans worldwide, having enjoyed collectathons like Yooka-Laylee and Banjo-Kazooie before it. Together, our abilities will make Yooka and Laylee more powerful than ever".

Instead of making a straight-up sequel, Playtonic has chosen to build on Yooka-Laylee's foundation and transform it into a more sophisticated and mature experience. To make Yooka-RePlaylee look like it is more than a remaster, the team has spent years studying user feedback and made hundreds of changes.

Although it was a noble attempt to regain the charm of traditional 3D platformers such as Banjo-Kazooie, the original Yooka-Laylee did so in some manners. Yooka-RePlaylee seeks to correct those things by redesigning the game's layout, graphics, and gameplay from scratch. The universe is neater and prettier because of the improved animations and the graphics. Also, performance and quality have been enhanced to provide a smoother gaming experience across all platforms.

In addition to the graphical enhancements, Yooka-RePlaylee adds new and improved challenges to increase the amount of work and goals present within the game. The developers have also improved those that exist by adding entirely new in-game activities to explore. Furthermore, an entirely new money pick-up has been unveiled, providing additional encouragement to progress and explore. The original game's camera and controller, which tend to be clumsy and unresponsive, were the main complaints.

Playtonic has tried to fix that by including a new control setup that makes players move more fluidly and makes it easier to balance talents. The camera system has likewise been tweaked so that players can better piece together the action. These alterations will greatly improve the platforming action, and they should also make the game more enjoyable and easier to play.

With a professionally scored soundtrack, Yooka-RePlaylee keeps alive the tradition of old-style platformers that have never been silent. The new musical soundtrack attempts to reflect the game's quirky and exploratory nature, complementing the experience as players explore, find, and get around obstacles.

High-quality 3D platformers have become scarcer outside of well-known franchises like Super Mario and Astro Bot, but 2D platformers are still quite popular among the independent and AA gaming communities. Yooka-RePlaylee has the potential to be a far better experience with the extra development time and community feedback, and Playtonic's dedication to reviving the collectathon genre is an ambitious move.

A brand-new gameplay teaser showcasing the game's improvements and fresh ideas was revealed at the Kind of Funny Games Showcase. Confirmed for Nintendo's next-generation hardware, Yooka-RePlaylee adds to the small but growing collection of games expected for the Switch 2.

As the platforming genre grows, Yooka-RePlaylee could be crucial, proving that there is still a market for large-scale 3D collectathon. Though it falls short of the core of the N64-era masterpieces, Playtonic's many enhancements make the game seem to be a potential addition to the genre.
