Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered brings back the 2009 campaign with updated visuals for modern audiences. Despite not including the multiplayer option similar to the rerelease of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare the campaign is strong enough to stand on its own. With incredible firefights, visuals, and an amazing soundtrack to bring it all together. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had one of the best military campaigns last generation and the single-player still holds up today.

Taking place after the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare returning soldier Soap MacTavish leads a special forces unit to take down the Russian Ultranationalist Party led by Vladimir Makarov. Players will take control of multiple characters within this unit and another Ranger squad in a series of locations throughout the world. Either hunting down Makarov or fighting against the Russian army.

The narrative isn't as strong but the shock value is still there. The controversial airport scene still paints a gory picture of how far Makarov is willing to go to achieve his goals. The mission is still skippable but it is necessary to showcase the brutality of this violent man. Bringing everything together is an amazing musical score that complements each situation, whether you're in an intense firefight against waves of trained soldiers lamenting on the death of an ally.

Beenox did an amazing job remastering this acclaimed game. The lightning, particle effects, and textures have been improved and look amazing. While not at par with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's visuals the game could easily be mistaken for a modern generation shooter. From my multiple playthroughs, I didn't experience any crashes or major issues.

The missions are diverse and have the player traveling around the world. With distinct locations and challenging enemy encounters breaking up the firefights. Occasionally you'll need to sneak and breach into areas, taking out guards in slow motion. It was back in 2009 and is still fun now. There's no cooperative special operations mode like in the original or multiplayer. There's some replayability with game modifiers unlocked by collecting Intel within the game but that will likely only entice trophy hunters.

Where Beenox could've improved was the AI. Like in the original allies still walk in front of players, block doors, and will often miss targets right in front of them. It would've been helpful to have ally names constantly highlighted as well since some enemy soldiers wear similar colored clothing. During large fights mistaking allies for enemies becomes more frequent and the game knows this. You're forgiven for a few shot allies but constant mistakes will end the mission.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered is a serviceable re-release of this 2009 game. The visuals look amazing and the campaign is still impressive. I did hope that Beenox made some improvements to the gameplay but perhaps they were trying to maintain the original game's core gameplay. There's little replayability here considering there's no multiplayer options but the single-player campaign is such high-quality it can be excused.
