Sorry We're Closed, the first entry title from à la mode games, hit the scene in 2023, pushing even further with its psychological horror overtones and mythical narrative. The game was developed by a small team of people who were all interested in providing a different type of story while still incorporating the puzzle-solving and mystery elements that have been their hallmark. The developer's methodology often involves merging various art styles and building compelling narratives, yielding games that are both modern and retro.

Sorry We're Closed drew my attention for its new take on the horror genre. It mixes unique gameplay, an eerie atmosphere, and a strong emphasis on story to provide a one-of-a-kind experience that explores horror and curiosity in a whole new way. With a focus on atmosphere and player immersion, à la mode games have established themselves within the indie circuit by releasing this game that breaks the mold of what you might have come to anticipate from indie releases.

The story of Sorry We're Closed revolves around a spooky small-town diner with an awful, unknown secret. The player assumes the role of the new employee beginning their first evening at the diner, a normal enough job but one that soon descends into something far more sinister. As the night drags on, the protagonist begins to notice odd events and meets enigmatic customers who are not what they appear to be.

The diner itself appears to be alive with secrets, hidden messages, and eccentricities that all point toward something far more sinister beneath the surface. Sorry We're Closed's storytelling is tightly wound, with a steady, suspenseful ramp.  The narrative unfolds gradually through discovery and dialogue with the diner's eccentric customers.

The game doesn't slug you with story beats right off the bat, instead allowing you to soak in the atmosphere and pick up hints as the night drags on. You will be wondering what is going on in this innocent-looking diner after encountering bizarre characters, receiving ominous messages, and witnessing increasingly bizarre events.

Each of the customers has a story to share, some providing helpful clues to the hero and others leading them deeper into a net of uncertainty and terror. As you solve the mysteries of the cafe, they will need to decide if the bizarre events are the work of supernatural forces, mind games, or something even more sinister. What begins as a routine mission quickly turns into an action-packed romp of horror, suspense, and revelation.

The game excels at having a good story and gripping plot, with twists that will have you on your toes and hanging on to it.  There is this ominous feeling of terror that every succeeding encounter becomes plunging into darkness.  The deeper you delve into the history and secrets of the diner, the better they understand the sinister truth that when they learn what really is out there, they can never return.

Sorry We're Closed is an adventure and puzzle first-person game whose primary role is to tour the diner, play with the environment, and solve puzzles. You start performing usual diner tasks such as taking orders, cooking, and cleaning up, but in the later parts of the evening, these activities are interrupted by the solving of increasingly difficult puzzles.

The basic mechanic is an exploration and interaction one, either conversing with strange customers, looking for hidden items, or interpreting cryptic clues. The gameplay is mostly non-combat, with an emphasis on exploring the site. You will have to search the diner carefully, looking for tiny details that will open up the next section of the story. Each action, from interacting with kitchen utensils to searching for clues under the counter, is intended to advance the story.

It's a game that fosters curiosity, and each interaction feels meaningful, elevating the everyday actions of a diner into something more complex and complicated. The game's pace is more sluggish than that of a standard action puzzle game, but the slow, deliberate pace suits the mood, allowing you to be drawn completely into the macabre ambiance of the diner.

The world is one puzzle in and of itself, and it becomes altered during play. Secret areas, encrypted emails, and artifacts will allow you to access fresh areas or figure out new turns in the plot. The intrigue escalates as new rooms and characters are explored, and by communicating with them, more of the sinister secrets behind the diner are revealed. Sorry We're Closed's puzzles are two-fold: they advance the story, and they tax the player's critical thinking skills.

The puzzles range from simple object-based activities, such as figuring out the ingredients for a recipe, to more complex, multi-step problems that involve observation, logic, and pattern recognition.  The diner is full of clues, tucked away in the most improbable of places, and it is up to the player to connect them. The puzzles are designed to be integrated into the narrative so that solving each one is like a great step forward in unlocking the secrets of the diner.

The game shakes things up by including a varied assortment of puzzle types so that none of the riddles are quite similar. Certain puzzles have you thinking creatively about the environment, such as moving objects around in certain ways or activating the diner machines to produce specific effects.

Others require you to interpret notes that other employees or patrons have left behind, notes that contain hidden messages that aren't revealed until you've gathered sufficient clues. There is no conventional combat in Sorry, we are closed, although this does not mean that there is no tension.  As the game unfolds, the supernatural aspects take shape, and you'll have to outsmart the entities that inhabit the cafe.

These situations are "combat" in their own way, demanding quick thinking, wit, and occasionally a little bit of luck to get through. The supernatural powers in the game are obstacles, pushing you to figure out how to avoid or get around them. The lack of traditional combat makes it all the more fun. The horror isn't surviving a scenario; it's puzzle-solving and enduring the eerie atmosphere that pervades the entire café.

It's a psychological horror game at its core, and the puzzles are an excellent means of keeping the player involved while constantly increasing the tension. Sorry We're Closed's puzzle mechanics are among its strongest points. They are ingeniously designed and seamlessly integrated into the story, and their solution is rewarding and satisfying.

The diversity of the riddles keeps the player's experience engaging, and with each new riddle, the player has the sense that they are learning more about the cafe and its enigmatic patrons. Yet, while the puzzles are nicely done overall, occasionally they are a little too hard, which will frustrate some of you. Some of the problems involve a high level of attention to detail, and missing a single small hint could mean being stuck for a very long time.

The game provides a few hints, but they are cryptic and may make the player even more unsure about what to do next. While this adds intensity, it can also reduce enjoyment for people who prefer things more straightforward. The lack of conventional combat is well-suited to the mood of the game. The emphasis on puzzle-solving and environmental interaction creates tension through the unseen and supernatural rather than overt combat.

It provides an atmosphere to the game as it replaces typical action elements with a more cerebral type of horror.  However, some of you might miss the feeling of control that is gained from fighting back against the game's threats. Visually, Sorry We're Closed blends retro-style pixel art with contemporary lighting effects. The offbeat, if not creepy, art style features character designs that are simultaneously familiar and strange.

The diner itself is well-designed, with each area containing something new to discover. Lighting controls mood, with flashing lights and shadows working together to build an eerie mood that keeps you off guard. The characters are stylized, with exaggerated features that sometimes make them appear comical, but their dialogue and actions frequently belie something more beneath the surface.

The paranormal aspects are presented in an equally engaging but creepy way, with distorted graphics that bring the extranormal abilities to life. Overall, the graphics also contribute significantly to the popularity of the game through its immersive experience in its environment.

The pixelated style of the graphics is invaluable and horrifying to behold, making every encounter even more exhilarating. Sorry We're Closed sound design is instrumental in the mood of the film. The soundtrack includes ambient, unsettling music that establishes the mood with each scene transition.

From the subdued hum of the cafe during the day, when the music appears to add to the general feeling of unease, to the wailing notes that fill the blackness of the night shift, the music contributes to the pervasive feeling of unease.

The ambient noises—the clinking of glasses, the hum of the refrigerator, and the occasional whispered voice—add to the sense that something is just out of the protagonist's sight. The voice acting is unflinching but magnificent, with characters delivering their lines in a way that adds to their enigmas and personalities.

Inaudible sound effects, such as resonating footfalls in empty hallways or the groaning of an opening door, are incorporated to create realism for each move. Sorry We're Closed is a humorous and interactive game with a dark, depressing story to complement puzzle-solving.

Its unique combination of mystery, psychological suspense, and supernatural thriller elements places it above the rest in the independent game world. The pacing and exploration gameplay keep you alert, and the puzzles engage you.

The lack of action may not appeal to all, but it contributes to the dark, psychological horror atmosphere of the game. If you enjoy mystery-tinged story games with an emphasis on psychological horror, Sorry We're Closed is a tense, thrilling experience that will have you questioning what's real and what's just a dream.
