PlayStation CEO Phil Spencer is Not Happy with Xbox’s Decision on Call of Duty

According to Spencer, the offer is 'inadequate on so many levels'.

After the acquisition of Activision by Xbox, future Call of Duty games will join Xbox Game Pass but debut simultaneously on PlayStation, Phil Spencer has announced. But according to PlayStation, this offer is not enough.

After Activision's current deal with Sony ends, Xbox head Phil Spencer stated last week that future Call of Duty games will continue to be available on PlayStation platforms for "at least several more years." Now, Spencer's offer is being referred to as "inadequate" by PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan. To be more precise, in a statement for Gamesindustry.biz Ryan said the following:

"Microsoft has only offered for Call of Duty to remain on PlayStation for three years after the current agreement between Activision and Sony ends. After almost 20 years of Call of Duty on PlayStation, their proposal was inadequate on many levels and failed to take account of the impact on our gamers. We want to guarantee PlayStation gamers continue to have the highest quality Call of Duty experience, and Microsoft’s proposal undermines this principle."

Call of Duty, Xbox, Activision, PlayStation

The reason why this statement came off as a shock to many is because when Xbox announced their decision regarding the franchise, they mentioned that their deal was “well beyond typical gaming industry agreements.” Jim Ryan, however, evidently seems to think otherwise. Jim Ryan also said that the deal was meant to be private and that he “hadn’t intended to comment on what [he] understood to be a private business discussion.” And yet, since it was Phil Spencer who brought the subject to the public, Ryan also felt the need to clarify what he thought on this topic.

As one of the top-selling video game franchises of all time, Call of Duty was the reason why gamers bought PlayStation in the first place for so many years. Thus, it was only natural for people to assume the future of Call of Duty for PlayStation was not as bright as it had been before the deal between Activision and Xbox was done. The games are going to be released for PlayStation players for three more years; after that, who knows? Maybe a new deal will arise.
