Baldur's Gate 3 has a large number of companions, all with their unique personalities, ability sets, and treads of storylines. Many require specific actions, discussion options, or exploration to recruit. The guide goes into detail about how to find and recruit all ten companions in the game.
Shadowheart: The Faithful Cleric
Shadowheart is one of the first characters you meet; she is a Half-high Elf Cleric. During the tutorial, she is apparently confined to a pod aboard the illithid ship. After the crash, you will find her lying on the beach, unconscious, near the starting point. Simply wake her up, and she'll be at your party. Shadowheart's storyline is so deeply intertwined with the overall story that she'll be an important figure throughout your journey.
Astaron: The Charismatic Rogue
Soon after landing, one finds Astarion, a High Elf Rogue. To do this, one travels northwest from the crash site. A brief conversation or a minor speech check will ensure he is a part of your group. His charming personality and cunning skills make him a great addition to stealth-based gameplay.
Gale: The Scholarly Wizard
Gale is a Human Wizard who stands beside a strange gateway near the broken ship. When close, he will yell out to you. A small conversation session with a possible check lets you free him from the portal, adding him to your party. This adds depth to the wisdom and magical ability of your party, making it more strategic.
Lae'zel: The Fearsome Fighter
Lae'zel is a Githyanki Fighter and, thus, another friend that can be encountered on the Illithid ship. After the crash, she'll be found in a cage north of the Druid Grove. To recruit her, you will have to kill the tieflings guarding her, then free her by using a clever method - for example, firing at the bottom of the cage. Some players mightn't take a liking for Lae'zel's rough attitude and dismiss her immediately, which would be a mistake, given that she's a good warrior.
Wyll: The Heroic Warlock
Wyll is a Human Warlock close to Druid Grove in a sort of training area. Speaking with him will give his backstory and his connection to the parasite of the mind flayers. It takes a few words to convince him to join your rank. Wyll's backstory and connections to certain quests make him a very interesting and powerful companion.
Karlach: The Blazing Barbarian
North of the Risen Road, across from a small garrison, you'll find a Tiefling barbarian named Karlach. There is even an outpost quest regarding that, which will bring you to her position south of the shattered tree. With Wyll accompanying you, the scene will be so much better since their stories sort of tie in with each other. Sweet and understanding, Karlach is spicy in attitude.
Minthara: The Merciless Paladin
Minthara is a Drow Paladin who appears in the Goblin Camp. You need to run an evil run-in in order to recruit her. She'll want you to attack the Druid Grove - kill the tieflings and druids. Apparently, agreeing to her scheme brings serious repercussions: Karlach will leave your party, some of your other companions might object, and even your alignment may change. The instance when you're able to succeed in her joining, among the most morally complicating recruiting decisions of the game, can be issued.
Halsin: The Noble Druid
Halsin is a Wood Elf Druid imprisoned in the Worg Pens of the Goblin Camp. He appears for the first time in bear form. After defeating the goblins guarding him, he makes it a point to offer his services to rid the Goblin commanders. Although Halsin's active recruitment technically doesn't get underway until Act 2, making sure he survives and helping the druids are both requirements that come before it. Later, in Last Light Inn, he asks for help with a portal, where he joins your party.
Jaheira: The Old Druid
Jaheira is a Half-elf Druid who joins in Act 2 from the Last Light Inn. You need to save the inn and the people inside in order to recruit her. The other important choices for her are keeping the cleric alive and making sure Shadowheart does not kill the Night Song. Later, Jaheira will help you resolve the shadow curse and accept joining you with years of experience in being a Harper.
Minsc: The Legendary Ranger
Minsc is a Human Ranger and is the last companion that could be recruited in Act 3. To recruit him, Jaheira needs to be in your active party. Part of the questline "The High Harpers," which takes you to the Counting House in Baldur's Gate, you solve a problem to get into the vault and then follow the information given through to the sewers. At the final encounter, defeat him using non-lethal methods before recruiting. Minsc has an eccentric personality and is a competent combatant; therefore, he is one of the more popular characters.
Closing Thoughts
Recruiting companions in Baldur's Gate 3 will involve extensive research and choices to be made. Each character has unique powers and perspectives that contribute to your quest, offering different ways to play through the game and presenting moral dilemmas. Whether you choose a good-aligned party or a more nefarious option, there are some significant changes in your adventure and relationships.
