Will There Be Returnal 2 or Repeat?
Is Housemarque developing Returnal 2 or a new IP called Repeat?
News by Rifaye on Dec 16, 2024
The roguelike third-person shooter Returnal, published in 2021 by Housemarque and Sony Interactive Entertainment, has received much positive feedback from critics for its visuals, combat, audio design, and technological achievements. However, there hasn’t been a new game from Housemarque in the last three years. While fans have been hoping for an update on Returnal 2 at The Game Awards 2024, there hasn’t been any word on the sequel till now from the developers.
However, a recent rumor suggests that Housemarque is developing a new PlayStation-exclusive game called Repeat. But that's all there is to say. There is little information about it, but we believe it could be the project name for the forthcoming title Returnal 2. The term "Repeat" might just refer to Housemarque's latest game. We're perplexed because there's too little information about whether it'll be a new game or something else.
Even though Repeat sounds like a project name, we believe it is Housemarque's title. They are naming it Repeat because they want to replicate the success they had with Returnal. The game may not necessarily be repeated in its entirety.
Housemarque, PlayStation's first-party studio, has confirmed the development of a new original IP. They are not producing Returnal 2, which is still confusing because there has been no official announcement, but they are going to use many of the ideas, gameplay design, and features that they established in Returnal in their new IP.
Housemarque's new IP could very well be an equally thrilling game. The roguelike genre is widespread, and it might be interesting to see a follow-up in Returnal's narrative, plot, and universe. Not jumping into a sequel of Returnal might not make as much sense until Housemarque's new IP is released, although it may be that Returnal never sees a sequel.
Hopefully, soon, we’ll find out more about Housemarque's upcoming game, whether it's a new original IP or a sequel to Returnal. Whatever it is, we're looking for something fantastic from the team since it’s hard not to produce another great game after making a title like Returnal.
