Dota 2 | 5 Best Heroes as of Patch 7.37
Some of the best heroes you can play as in this patch
Game Guide by Arne on Sep 12, 2024
Dota 2 has had its share of broken heroes and busted builds, and they usually get patched out relatively quickly. Some heroes, however, persist in being the 'best' for quite a while. Some heroes are just generally good, while others are pretty situational. A good hero can be useful no matter the match-up and excel at all game points. Today, we will look at the 5 best heroes in patch 7.37.
Shadow Demon
Shadow Demon is a ranged intelligence hero who has often been a reliable support for many teams throughout the years. His stats aren't anything to write home about, but his abilities make him one of the best heroes in the patch. He excels as a hard support, particularly oriented towards defense. His presence is felt throughout a match, from the early to the late game.
His ultimate, Demonic Purge, takes away a chunk of the enemy HP, slows them down, and removes all positive debuffs from them. This is great when paired with his first ability, disruption, which banishes the enemy for a few seconds and returns them with two illusions under your control. Demonic Purge goes through disruption, so you can use these two to primarily fulfill your role of initiation and counter-initiation. You can use Demonic Purge [and sometimes disruption] to set up ganks, and you can also use them to remove any buffs from enemies initiating or save allies being ganked. When paired with his other abilities, his facet, Promulgate, deals incredible damage to enemies while slowing them down and removing buffs. Ideally, you will have allies who can deal enough damage to finish the job.
However, Shadow Demon lacks in other areas. He cannot provide any survivability to allies without heals, sustains, or other real disables. He also lacks escape mechanisms, making him an easy target for many enemy carriers. Ultimately, his pros far outweigh his cons, earning him a place on this list.
Dragon Knight
Dragon Knight has seen quite a bit of change over the years. With changes to his ultimate, and making much of it based on his facets. He has seen a resurgence as a carry, especially at the professional level, with him being one of the most picked heroes in the group stage of TI13.
A relatively simple hero to play, Dragon Knight is a reliable and durable frontliner that requires very little to become useful. This is further augmented by his ability to farm fast and survive ganks. Dragon Knight has a high strength gain, further augmented by his innate ability, 'Dragon's Blood,' which boosts his health regen armor, scaling at every level. This makes him extremely formidable at the late game.
His passive ability, Wyrm's Wrath, lets him get bonuses depending on which facet he picked. Fire Dragon gives him a cleave, Corrosive Dragon reduces armor and poisons the enemy, and Frost Dragon reduces the enemy's movement and attack speed and saps at their healing. This lets the Dragon Knight specialize against enemy carriers.
He relies on his ultimate, Elder Dragon Form, which boosts almost all of his abilities, gives him bonus attack range and attack damage, and makes him look cooler overall. The drawback is its long cooldown. While being 100 seconds, if you do not die while in your elder dragon form, it lasts for 60 seconds. So there is only a 40-second window between being in the stronger form if you play your cards right.
This comes to bite him, as he needs his elder dragon form to dish out damage and relies on items to stay alive. Even then, strong carries such as Phantom Assassin can burst him down if he is distracted. However, his overall durability and the fact that he is easier to master make him one of the best heroes in this patch.
Naga Siren
A versatile carry, Naga Siren can be played in two different, very distinct roles. A melee agility hero, she holds enemies in place while her illusions [and herself] cut them down with quick attacks and continuous damage from her facet, Rip Tide. Naga Siren is also renowned [and hated] for her monotone gameplay. She spends a large chunk of the game farming and split pushing, using her illusions to keep her out of harm's way. She also has an ultimate that puts her enemies to sleep, giving her ample time to teleport or for her teammates to set up incredible combos.
With a first-item radiance and a manta style, Naga Siren can farm extremely fast and, on top of that, split push with extreme prejudice. Her low cooldown root and speed mean she can slither her way to bring down enemies. While she has a slow start, when she gets the right items and comes online, she sets a pace that is hard to match. This also means you need to be mechanically adept to play her; expect a lot of micro-management with those illusions to split farm and split push.
She is tricky to play, and this is the core thing that detracts her from many players. Her ultimate, while a lifesaver, can also disrupt ally spells and damage if not communicated properly. Like many carriers, she is also item-dependent, even when playing as a support. That being said, she still is an extremely scary hero to play against, making her one of the best heroes in this patch.
Sand King
The Sand King is an unsuspecting entry into the list; he can deal massive amounts of AoE damage while disabling multiple enemies. His first skill gives him an innate initiation and escape mechanism that is also a good, if often unreliable, disable. His second and third skills, Sand Storm and Stinger, can effectively deal with enemy creep waves, also making a good counter to pushers.
Mostly played in the offlane, Sand King is a good harasser. With his innate ability, Caustic Finale, he can easily whittle down the HP of enemy carriers, stun them with his Burrowstrike, and escape. Sandstorm and Stinger slow down enemies and help them after any initiation. A blink dagger is a must for Sand King. As he transitions to the mid-game, he becomes the key initiator, sets up most ganks, and deals the most damage. He also becomes somewhat tanky if allowed to farm and counter-pushes when he can.
Alas, he starts to fall off near the late game, as his ultimate and some abilities do not scale well into the late game. Despite this, by then, he should have an array of items that make him a near-unstoppable initiator, making him one of the best heroes in this patch.
Warlock
Warlock is a strange case; at the onset, he seems like a measly support hero with timid abilities. However, throughout the patch, Warlock rises to be one of the most annoying heroes to deal with. His innate ability, Eldritch Summoning, creates tiny little imps that seem inconsequential but make him an absolute monster when paired with his first ability, fatal bonds. See, in the planning stage, he can use it on the enemy when they try to hit creeps; with each of the enemy creeps that die, one of these little imps will spawn and start to chase the enemy heroes that were fatally bonded, exploding when killed or going near the enemy hero.
His third ability, Upheaval, when paired with the Aghanim's Shard, slows down enemies to the point where they're turtles. This makes them easy pickings for the imps that spawn and explode. Paired with Upheaval's damage, the imps, and his Golem, Warlock is a scary damage dealer that can pick off unsuspecting foes, no matter how many there are.
He has a high strength gain, making him pretty durable, but his low agility and lack of escape ability often make him a sitting duck if caught. Warlock also suffers when his team is behind; he needs space to set up, drops his abilities, and lets them do their work. But many players, especially casual ones, often find it hard to counter or even find him, thanks to a myriad of items that he should usually get. This makes him one of the best heroes in this patch.
