Guild Wars 2 Guide | How to Get the Roller Beetle Mount Fast (Unlock Steps, Controls, Races & Tips)

The definitive, reader-friendly walkthrough for unlocking, mastering, and racing the Roller Beetle in 2025.

Game Guide by Ornstein on  Oct 10, 2025

The Roller Beetle is one of the most exhilarating mounts in Guild Wars 2, capable of blistering straight-line speed, graceful drifts, and time-trial mastery across Tyria.

This guide lays out exactly how to unlock the mount, how to handle its Boost and Drift mechanics, which masteries matter, and where to race for achievements and unique rewards. Every step is written for you, with corrected names, proper capitalization, and clean, paragraph-style formatting.

How to Unlock the Roller Beetle

Unlocking the Roller Beetle involves four major steps. You begin in Living World Season 4 Episode 3, which requires ownership of Path of Fire and the specific episode, Long Live the Lich. Complete the first and second missions and then start the third mission, Tactical Triage.

When you check in with Gorrik at the start of Tactical Triage, you unlock the High Roller achievement and open the next track of objectives.

The second step centers on the Beetlejuice achievement. You must locate nine different enhancements scattered across the Domain of Kourna. Travel to the designated areas on that map, find each specific object, and collect it to progress.

This is a straightforward scavenger-style step: move between the marked zones, interact with the required objects, and watch the achievement track advance as you gather all nine enhancements.

The third step focuses on the Beetle Saddle achievement. Here, you collect seven items from several sources in and beyond the Domain of Kourna. Defeat Awakened Inquest—a dense farm exists inside Dabiji Hollows—and interact with Lab Terminals on the top floor of the main lab for another item.

Defeat Golems across Kourna, including those inside Dabiji Hollows. Complete a bounty in Kourna using the Bounty Board at the Allied Encampment; if participation is sparse, start a group and finish one bounty to earn the drop.

Hunt Steam Creatures—a convenient cluster is at the Lake of Lamentation in Lornar's Pass near Lamentation Waypoint. Defeat the Legendary Ley-Line Anomaly world boss, which rotates among Timberline Falls, Iron Marches, and Gendarran Fields. Finally, defeat the Inquest Golem Mark II world boss in Mount Maelstrom, which appears two hours after the daily reset and then every three hours.

Continue the collection with additional sources referenced in the same achievement path. Defeat Junundu Wurms in the Crystal Desert, commonly found along the sulfurous rivers of The Desolation.

Complete the Alpha Beetle event in the Far Silverwastes, accessed via a Skritt Tunnel southeast of the Blue Oasis.

Purchase a required item from the task vendor near Apizmic Grounds Waypoint after finishing the Help the Critically Endangered Heket Tribe heart since the last daily reset and gathering fifty Inscribed Shards—the Kourna map currency obtainable from Kournan Supply Caches, the map's main meta, task vendors, and other sources.

Defeat Cave Wurms at Ntouka Pond in Kourna's northwest, entering via tunnels south of the pond at the Loyalist Warren. Defeat the Toxic Spider Queen in Kessex Hills, which can spawn near Gap Waypoint and Viathan Waypoint. After collecting the full set, return to Gorrik to complete the achievement and unlock your Roller Beetle.

Roller Beetle Controls and Handling

Once the Roller Beetle is unlocked, you gain a movement kit that feels unique among mounts. At low speed, you move like your character, but the defining mechanic is Boost, a forward surge that rockets you to immense speed while reducing turning capability during acceleration.

You can make gradual directional changes while boosting, but precise cornering comes from using Drift to lower ground friction and increase turning rate. Mastering Boost and Drift is the core of reliable beetle handling; once the rhythm clicks, rapid traversal across long stretches becomes second nature.

Practice is very important. The northern parts of the Domain of Kourna have forgiving terrain that was made with the beetle in mind. This gives you room to practice speeding up, slowing down, and sliding through turns. If you like things to be organized, the Roller Beetle Training journey that starts at the Allied Encampment gives you a structured way to learn the basics while you explore some of Kourna.

Combat Skill and Masteries

Your engage skill, Roll Out, propels you forward and damages foes you pass through. Trigger it slightly before you reach enemies to connect cleanly, since the leap carries you beyond the initial target point.

The first beetle mastery, Wrecking Ball, adds a knockback to enemies struck during Roll Out, increasing crowd control in open-world fights.

The second mastery, Barrier Smash, lets you break special Roller Beetle walls found in certain maps—several appear in the Domain of Kourna and hide extra loot—and shatter Volatile Crystals in Kourna for a small burst of Volatile Magic and experience. These mechanics are minor overall but convenient while traversing the region.

Doing a trick in the air is a high-risk, high-reward way to get your endurance back: hold down the jump key while you're in the air to do the trick, and if you finish it before landing, your endurance will return. If you fall at the wrong time, you'll lose endurance instead, which can stop your next Boost. For time trials, getting this timing right is very important, but it's not necessary for normal research.

As with any mount, choose the right tool for the situation. Use the Roller Beetle for long, relatively flat stretches where speed is king; if you must scale cliffs or navigate vertical obstacles, swap to a more appropriate mount before switching back to the beetle for the next straightaway.

Races, Achievements, and Rewards

You can race the Roller Beetle in many contexts, including festival tracks and earlier Path of Fire races such as the course beginning in the Free City of Amnoon. The largest, most cohesive set appears under the Roller Beetle Racing achievement category within the Side Stories tab. This category features six unique races, plus an additional race added later.

A natural starting point is Rolling Rookie: Kessex Corner, located near Overlake Haven in Kessex Hills. This quick, approachable course introduces key checks and leads you toward the other tracks across Brisban Wildlands, Gendarran Fields, Snowden Drifts, Mount Maelstrom, and Diessa Plateau.

Broadly, you will complete achievements for finishing each race at least once and for meeting the gold challenge time on each course. Expect to practice repeatedly for the fastest times.

Some tracks—such as Ghostfire Run and Lakeside Loop—are relatively forgiving, while others—like Tropic Valley Raceway and Jormag's Fang—demand tight lines, confident drifting, and consistent trick timing.

Community-created resources also exist to help push limits, such as technical primers on drifting theory and utility overlays that display speed and related metrics.

These third-party tools are optional and not required to complete any official race or to navigate maps; focus on fundamentals first, then explore advanced techniques if deeper time-trial optimization is a personal goal. Aside from the official courses, guilds often make their own Roller Beetle tracks in Guild Halls, and creative players set up unofficial races in the open world, using the natural geometry of each map to make smart routes and stunt lines.
