Game Guide by Groot on Aug 13, 2025
You can hire Yasusuke Sawamura in Rise of the Rōnin through the bond task system, which is linked to the questline of another character. Before you can access his tasks, you have to go through certain character traits in order to hire him.

Sawamura is an expert in ninja methods and has special fighting skills that make sneak attacks and attacks from a distance more effective.
How to Unlock Yasusuke Sawamura
To unlock Yasusuke Sawamura as your ally, you must complete the "In Search of Knowledge" bond mission for Yukichi Fukuzawa.
This mission becomes available after completing the "Cultural Exchange" ronin mission, which is part of the main story progression.
The recruitment process involves completing Fukuzawa's bond mission rather than directly interacting with Sawamura initially.

You need to complete the "Cultural Exchange" story mission first, then seek out and complete Fukuzawa's "In Search of Knowledge" bond mission to gain access to Sawamura.
The "In Search of Knowledge" mission involves various objectives and challenges related to Fukuzawa's character development and story arc. Completing this mission and all its objectives will make Sawamura available as a recruitable ally.
In the game, finishing tasks for one character can give them access to different friends. This secondary way of recruiting shows how character ties are linked.
Combat Abilities and Equipment
Yasusuke Sawamura can use both katanas and polearms in battle, which makes him useful in a variety of settings. Because he is good at using two weapons, he can adapt well to different types of enemies and changing fighting situations.
His backup weapon is a light ninja shuriken, which lets him hit from a distance and goes well with his ninja-style fighting.

You can quickly hit from a distance with the shuriken, and you can also use them to weaken enemies before fighting them up close.
His blessing ability increases damage dealt with your grappling rope and shuriken attacks. This blessing enhances unconventional combat approaches and rewards players who utilize the game's mobility and ranged options beyond standard weapon combat.

Bond Level Rewards and Combat Training
When you reach maximum bond level with Yasusuke Sawamura, he provides specialized training in ninja combat techniques.
He teaches you two combat styles with the same name for your katana and polearm weapons. Both styles come from the Ninjutsu skill tree, which represents one of the special skill trees in the game.

The fighting style is called Hayabusa Ryu, and its methods stress speed, accuracy, and trying to stay out of sight while fighting.
These methods are different from traditional samurai fighting styles and give samurai different ways to fight.

At maximum bond level, Sawamura grants you two dexterity skill points, which can be invested in the dexterity skill tree to enhance agility, accuracy, and speed-based combat abilities.
Additionally, Sawamura enables combination assassinations when you reach maximum bond level with him. These coordinated stealth attacks allow you and Sawamura to eliminate enemies together during infiltration missions.

He also provides special armor from the Ninja Gaiden series, offering unique protective equipment with visual aesthetics that reflect ninja themes and enhanced statistics suitable for stealth-oriented gameplay approaches.
