The beginning of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty might be a challenging experience because multiple important systems are built on top of each other. After you have gained an understanding of the Five Phases, Spirit, Morale, and Wizardry, the game transitions into a more fluid and satisfying experience.
This guide covers the fundamentals you should be aware of from an early stage so you can build more intelligently, fight more effectively, and recover from mistakes more quickly.
Understanding the Five Phases and Element Counters
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are the fundamental components of the universe. Every one of them counters another, and when it comes to dealing with status effects, these counters are the most important.
Wood is used to counter Metal; that is, Earth is used to counter Water, which is used to fight Fire, which is used to counter Metal, which is used to counter Metal, and that is used to counter Metal.
When you are attacked by an element that has a status, the counter element can eliminate that condition. For example, you can use Water effects to cancel Burn from Fire.
Each phase has a status effect tied to it. Wood causes Shock, which drains Spirit over time and squeezes the upper and lower limits of your Spirit gauge. Fire causes Burn, which drains HP over time.
Earth causes Heaviness, which makes targets take more Spirit damage and reduces how much Spirit they regain from actions. Metal causes Toxin, which extends other debuffs while draining both HP and Spirit. Water causes Chill, which stops automatic Spirit recovery and speeds up automatic Spirit loss when your Spirit is positive.

Stats and Soft Caps for Efficient Builds
Each stat contributes to a gain in HP, but Wood contributes more than any other stat. Additionally, Wood improves Spirit Defense and extends the duration of spells, which is advantageous for buffs and setups that rely on lightning energy.
Wood also increases the duration of spells. Because Fire raises the amount of Spirit Gain earned from attacks and lessens the cost of Martial Arts, it is compatible with a more aggressive playstyle.
Earth increases the amount of equipment weight capacity and increases the amount of Spirit Gain gained by deflecting, which is beneficial for defensive builds with heavy armor.
Metal increases the sustainability of Spirit and decreases the costs of Wizardry, allowing players to focus more on debuffs and toxic play. Water increases the damage dealt by ranged attacks, improves stealth, making it easier to land critical strikes, and lowers the cost of Spirit while deflecting.
You can avoid wasting levels by using soft caps. When it comes to a key damage stat, damage scaling often drops somewhere around 30. Around the age of forty, Wood Spirit Defense maintains its strength.
A significant decrease in Metal Spirit Sustainability occurs after level 10, making level 10 a clean foundation for many constructions. When it comes to Spirit Consumption decreases, very evident breakpoints occur at 15, 30, and 46. Weight growth in equipment typically tapers down about the 35 Earth mark.

Wizardry Spells Basics and Strong Early Picks
You are not restricted in any way, as you can acquire all of the Wizardry Spells because you are leveling up. Spell requirements are broken down into three categories: the needed level of virtue, the required rank of morale, and the cost of the Spirit requirement.

Toxin Bubbles is a reliable technique to keep Toxin early on in Metal, and Life Wither is a powerful tool for damaging windows. An upgrade called Venom Snare can be acquired at a later time.
When it comes to control and pull settings, Sandsink is a solid choice on Earth. Meanwhile, you can dominate space, add Heaviness, and deal steady damage with Imposing Slab.

Combat Flow, Spirit, and Deflect Fundamentals
Combat revolves around building and spending Spirit. Light attacks build Spirit, while heavy Spirit Attacks, Martial Arts, and Wizardry spend it. Heavy attacks hit much harder when your Spirit is positive, so clean offense is about staying in the blue, then cashing out at the right moment.
Deflecting is the biggest skill check. Deflecting a critical blow can instantly shift the fight, opening enemies for a critical hit and shrinking their Spirit gauge over time. A safer habit is holding the block while attempting to deflect.
If the timing is missed, you still avoid HP damage, even though block drains Spirit. Deflecting in the direction of the attack can also help, so deflecting forward or backward based on the attack can make timing feel more natural. A weapon swap can also act as a deflect when used correctly, giving you another defensive tool.

Divine Beast Utility and Unneutralized Effects
Your Divine Beast can either be summoned for an attack or infused into your weapon for an effect. When it comes to Metal play, Tengshe is a great example because she applies Toxin pressure and rewards bouts in which you keep adversaries debuffed.
The fact that the effects of Divine Beast cannot be nullified by phase affinity is a significant advantage, particularly in situations when an adversary would ordinarily resist your element.
Morale, Fortitude, Flags, and Revenge Recovery
The Morale Rank and the Fortitude Rank are the two ranks that are important in every assignment. Your temporary power level in the stage is called your Morale Rank. You can acquire it by engaging in effective combat and making powerful plays.
Still, you can lose it if you take critical hits. Your morale will decrease to its lowest point, known as Fortitude Rank, when you die.
You need flags to increase your Fortitude Rank. Marking Flags are secret and reward investigation, whereas Battle Flags are apparent rest points that may be found throughout the game.
Not only do you lose only half of your Genuine Qi when you pass away, but the adversary who was responsible for your death is also marked. Defeating that target will allow you to retrieve the Genuine Qi that you had lost, as well as the morale that you had lost.
Building morale before a boss can create a constant advantage, as the boss attempts to restore lost Genuine Qi and morale on entry. Additionally, the boss attempts return lost morale.

Respec and Battle Sets at the Hermit
After you have the hang of the hub advancement, respecting is a breeze. After resetting virtues through the Hermit, you can quickly reassign points by utilizing the Reset Parameters ability.
