XBOX Disc-to-Digital Tech Could Shape Next-Gen Consoles

The next-generation console battle is just around the corner, with PlayStation 6 and the next-gen XBOX most likely to launch late next year. But that next-gen battle has already started, with a disc-to-digital program on XBOX and PlayStation still deaf to all the PlayStation outcry about physical media and games on physical media.

Looks like Sony won't change that decision. There won't be any delays, and starting in 2028, PlayStation will no longer release games on discs. If you want to play PlayStation games, you will have to buy them digitally on the PlayStation Store. Obviously, previously released games will still work on PlayStation 5 with physical discs, but PlayStation 6 will not have a physical drive.

And to be fair, XBOX probably won't have that drive either. Maybe some attachable drive. Who knows? We'll see how that goes. Today, we want to talk about a technology that lets XBOX actually offer that disc-to-digital program, while PlayStation can't, even though PlayStation fans are asking Sony to at least let them transfer their licenses.

They want to switch from physical discs to digital, like they can on XBOX. That's not as easy as it seems because PlayStation doesn't have that technology built into its console ecosystem. So, PlayStation 6 will not get the benefit of transferring previous-generation games to the PlayStation account like XBOX does, at least for many games.

The interesting thing is that this is a PlayStation technology they've never used on their consoles because they thought they'd never need it. XBOX did, and that technology is pretty old because it all started with Xbox One. This is where that technology comes from. And it's all about the serial numbers on the actual discs. Xbox consoles can read these serial numbers.

Disc-to-Digital Could Become Important for Next-Gen Consoles

Even though it's not necessarily new technology, it will be very important for next-generation consoles. That's why it's being developed as a next-gen technology: it will be very important for next-gen consoles. We all know what's going to happen late next year. Next-generation consoles will launch. Most of them will most likely not ship with a disc drive.

Rumors suggest XBOX will continue to support physical discs, but we don't yet know whether that means the next-gen XBOX will ship with an optical drive. As for optical drive attachments or similar, maybe they will allow PC drives to work with these consoles as well.

XBOX has that technology, and PlayStation doesn't. Maybe there's some other way to do it, and maybe PlayStation will offer something in the future. We've seen that a lot before. XBOX introduced new technology, whether that was support for 1440p, HDR, machine learning, or VR. Some of these features were available even on last-generation consoles, but not on PlayStation.

And we now see all these features on PlayStation as well. Maybe that will change in the future. But backward compatibility and transferring your game library from one console to another is really important, especially at the very beginning of a generation. Later on, not really, because the next-gen library will be bigger, so people will not rely on older games as much.

The fact of the matter is that, unfortunately, with PlayStation, they won't get games on physical media for this generation of consoles anymore, and new games won't be released on PlayStation 5 discs. All games will be physical starting next year, 2028. There may still be some games here and there and some re-releases and that kind of stuff, apparently, but new games, not really.

With Xbox, the funny thing is we still don't know. There are rumors that Xbox will still support physical media, but will they really? We'll have to wait and see. At least we have that disc-to-digital program, and apparently, it even works on the good old Xbox One. You can actually use Xbox One to transfer Xbox Series games to your digital library.
