In Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, getting a Skell improves the traveling and overall gameplay. This is a guide on how to get a Skell as quickly as possible.

What You Need to Get a Skell

You don't have to be a certain level to do Chapter 6, but you do have to plant probes in 20% of the Neverwinter region. You can do this during the Chapter 4 mission that goes through that area, or you can go back if you missed a few.

However, you need to complete an Affinity Mission called "A Friend in Need" before you can start Chapter 6. You can find it in the Blade Barracks.

Sadly, you need to be level 19 to do this mission. Because of this, you can't get a Skell until you reach level 19. Here are some quick ways to get to level 19.

How to Level Up Fast

Take some time to make Augments that will give you more experience at the AM Terminal in Armory Alley. You can keep track of the things you need and get them. Don't forget to put them in any armor slots that are empty.

After that, keep an eye out for enemies a few levels above your party while you complete the story and Affinity missions. A yellow name banner will show who they are. It's hard to beat them, but they give you a lot more experience than enemies of the same level and even more from missions.

If you want to fight these monsters, you should have Lin and Irina in your party. Lin can make them more aggressive and give your team more defense, and Irina has a lot of healing arts that will keep your team alive. The last slot is great for a character who is mean, like Lao or Elma.

Try not to take on too many Affinity Missions that aren't necessary as you rush to level 19. This will make things go even faster. Though they may take a while, you can always come back to them.

How to Get Your Skell License

Go to the Blade Barracks and talk to Vanham after you've finished A Friend in Need and Chapter 6. You'll be sent to do some work for each of the eight divisions. Here's the right way to do them.

Test of Proficiency 1

You have to put in a data probe at Primordia's Site 177. Most likely, you already have one in there, and the quest will be marked as complete automatically. If not, go to the FrontierNav area of your map and put any mining probe there. If you don't have any extra, take one from somewhere else.

Test of Proficiency 2

You need to kill 12 Blitz Blas in Noctilum, which is mostly around FN Site 209. You can quickly go to them to make them appear again.

Test of Proficiency 3

Gives you the job of beating Shat Skith in North Point Cove. Should Shat Skith not appear, quickly move several times until it does, then kill the flying fish.

Test of Proficiency 4

Get a Solar Starship Map in Humdrum Peaks because they told you to. Just jump down into this basin and grab it from this mess.

Test of Proficiency 5

You have to look for certain things all over Noctilum, Oblivia, and Primordia. In Oblivia, the items can be found in a cave below FN Site 302.

Test of Proficiency 6

There's a bit more to this one. On FrontierNav, you need to place and connect research probes in a way that earns them a total of 15,000. I think they should be put in Noctilum with a booster probe because it's a place with a lot of money-making potential.

Take out as many mining probes as you need to in order to get more credits. After, you can put them back together. You can get new mining materials and money every 30 minutes in-game, so finish the last two exams while you wait.

Test of Proficiency 7

Taller is in the Administrative District, and you need to help him. In Primordia, you can go hunt Grexes. Give one of the three weapons he gives you to a member of your active party.

Test of Proficiency 8

Asks you to help one of three Ma-non, which are these little Ewoks-wannabes. The Handyman mission starts in the hangar below the Armory District, which we cleared.

Our little friend told us to go to Oblivia and break some Prone mechs to get items.

Calls for Help and Flight

When you finish all eight tests, this guy named Walter in the hangar will give you your own Skell. But you'll need three more for your party in the end. You'll have to wait until you reach level 30 to buy them from the shop, though.

Also, if you want your Skell to be able to fly, you'll be able to do so automatically once you finish Chapter 9.
