Robert's Steam Summer Sale 2017 Recommendations

Robert crawls out from under his rock with belated recommendations for the 2017 Steam Summer Sale.

The 2017 Steam Summer Sale has been happening for a while now. In fact, it's rather close to its end. I usually hold onto any purchases until the final period of the sale, despite there not being any flash deals or increased discounts in the final days. Thus, in case there's anyone out there who's resisted the urge to throw cash at the Steam Store until now, here's a list of titles that have given me some good hours of fun.

Hollow Knight, Steam Summer Sale, Feature, Reccomendation, Image

I'll kick off the list with the most recently releasted title on it, Hollow Knight. Priced at 9,89€ or your regional equivalent, the game is one of the best Metroidvania titles you can get your hands on. Taking some cues from Dark Souls and having an easily recongizable, beautiful art style, it has players exploring a bug kingdom, uncovering what has happened, while battling a good variety of different foes. Hollow Knight is a journey filled with great combat encounters, beauty, emotion and, quite possibly, a bit of frustration. For my thoughts on the game, have a look at the Hollow Knight Review.

The Swapper, Steam Summer Sale 2017, Feature, Reccomendation, Image

Priced at 2,65€, or your regional equivalent, The Swapper is the second entry on this list. It is a puzzle platformer based around the idea of using clones in order to solve various puzzles that block your way as you explore a space station. The catch is that you can transfer your consciousness in between these clones, which gives the story quite an interesting spin. The art assets made from physical clay, alongside great lighting make for quite an atmospheric journey which, even without the current discount, is a clear must-have.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall, Steam Summer Sale 2017, Feature, Reccomendation, Image

Harebrained Schemes have done a good job bringing the Shadowrun series back. While Shadowrun: Returns might have had a few missteps (which nonetheless didn't break the experience), the following titles, Dragonfall and Hong Kong, took into account what needed to change and thoroughly delivered. Set in an universe where technology and magic co-exist, their blend of tactical, turn-based fights, varied and distinct classes and great, detailed writing make for some worthwhile RPG experiences. If I had to pick one, I'd go with Shadowrun Dragonfall, which goes for 2,99€ or your regional equivalent, however any of the three titles (including the 10,35€ bundle are good choices). Feel free to also give my Shadowrun: Dragonfall Review a read.

Machinarium, Steam Summer Sale 2017, Reccomendation, Feature, Image

Machinarium's a point-and-click adventure game that, if you've somehow missed, you absolutely have to play. Guiding Josef, the little robot in the artwork above, through rust-filled streets to rescue his beloved Berta will acquaint you with Amanita Design's unique, wacky imagination. Breathing an endless amount of life and personality into the city's robot inhabitants, a handful of moments from the game have remained fresh in my memory to this day. Certain puzzles are definitely tricky, however, they rarely pass into arcane territory. You can get Machinarium for 2,49€ or your regional equivalent.

Always on his toes, Daav put up a list of lesser known titles under 5€ much earlier than yours truly. Check it out.
