As the release date for Steam Frame approaches, an untrue price rumor is spreading online. The leaked information says that the headset might cost around $900 when it comes out this month. The information has not been proven true, and it is still unclear where the claim came from. A $900 Steam Frame would be cheaper than some previous expectations.

A recent rumor from Tyler McVicker reportedly suggested a price of around $1,100, which many considered reasonable after estimating the cost of the Steam hardware lineup. A $900 price could also raise concerns about stock availability if scalpers buy up large quantities and resell them at higher prices.

Valve Steam Frame Latest Launch Updates

Leak Points to a $900 Starting Price

We have argued for a higher Steam Frame price because of that concern. If Valve prices it at $900, scalpers could potentially buy them up and keep the headset out of stock for longer. At the same time, $900 would make the Steam Frame easier to consider, especially if Valve uses an invitation system similar to that used for other Steam hardware.

Some people believe the Steam Frame should cost around $500, while others expect the price to reach $1,100 to $1,500. The reported $900 figure comes from skins.com, a Counter-Strike deals and skins marketplace. Whether the claim is accurate, the price point is worth discussing.

Valve has continued to reveal more information about the Steam Frame, including material that accidentally appeared in its Android APK. The leaked material included an unboxing video, facial plate information, wireless adapter setup, controllers, hand straps, and wrist straps.

Steam Frame Release Signs Continue to Appear

Steam hardware updates have also shown more activity around the Steam Frame. The Steam Frame wireless adapter received its first update in a week after going about 2 months without updates. Valve's FEX-86 ARM emulator has received multiple updates, and the compatibility layer for Android games on Linux has also been updated.

Steam Frame ARM64 compatibility list has also been updated. None of these changes confirm a release date, but the activity suggests that Valve is continuing to prepare the software and hardware. The accidental appearance of eight Steam Frame videos on Steam is another development worth watching.

We have seen more information about the headset recently, and the timing makes the device look closer to release. Based on the information currently available, Valve also hasn't received a Steam Frame shipment in multiple weeks. That could mean the company already has enough units for launch, although there is no confirmation that this is the reason.

Valve Anniversary Could Bring New Steam Frame News

Valve's 30th anniversary is on August 24, just a few days away. That has led to more speculation about a possible Steam Frame announcement, release date, or reservation information. We could see the date when interest can be registered or when users can join a reservation list. A Steam anniversary event could also bring Steam sales or discounts on first-party games.

Valve Steam Frame Side View

A discount on Steam Deck would also be welcome, while a 30% discount on the Steam Frame for the 30th anniversary would obviously be a much bigger surprise. Valve has given no indication it plans anything like that, but the anniversary gives the company a chance to share more information.

Steam Frame game compatibility has also continued to expand. Eleven Table Tennis has received Steam Frame verification, giving the headset another VR game to add to its launch library. Other games receiving verification include Table Space, Pirate Space Trainer, Luke Mamno Computer, Winlands, Crystal Rift, Climbey, Bazooka Rhythm Game, SimplePlanes VR, Underworld Overseer, and Ignite.

Steam Frame now has more than 80 verified games, and more developers have been getting their games verified than usual. We would rather see the software and game library properly prepared before launch, even if that means waiting a little longer. Half-Life Alyx has also received multiple changes on SteamDB over the past few weeks.

One update addresses a long-standing issue with the Linux build related to syncing save data through Steam Cloud. These changes could be connected to the upcoming Steam Frame release. We would like to see Half-Life Alyx become a Steam Frame verified game, especially because it would be a major addition to the standalone headset's library.

Steam Frame Wireless Adapter Could Improve Streaming

Steam Frame wireless adapter is expected to use both the home Wi-Fi connection and the adapter connection at the same time to improve streaming performance. That could help avoid connection problems that can happen when a headset relies on a shared home Wi-Fi network.

When streaming a game from a gaming PC, the connection method matters because a busy Wi-Fi network can introduce stuttering and other problems. We have been wondering how the wireless adapter and home Wi-Fi would work together. If the system can combine both connections, it could provide a more consistent connection when streaming games to the Steam Frame.

Valve still needs to address smaller software issues before launch. We would rather give Valve some extra time to fix these problems, prepare the game library, and optimize the software so the Steam Frame can launch with the necessary systems ready.

Valve Steam Frame Controller

Steam Frame price remains the biggest unknown.

The reported price of $900 has not been confirmed, and prices are still thought to be between $800 and $1,500, based on the model and final specs. Price changes are also made more difficult because Snapdragon chip prices are likely to rise, which could affect the cost of new hardware.

The current hardware market is not an easy environment for launching a new device. Memory and component costs have been changing, while new hardware prices have continued to rise. Valve will therefore have to find a price that works for the hardware while keeping the Steam Frame attractive.

The $900 number is just a guess for now. There are more and more Steam Frame updates, confirmed games, software changes, and secret videos that make it look like the launch is getting closer, but Valve still needs to confirm the exact price and date.
