Xbox Project Helix leaks point toward three hardware tiers combining consoles, handhelds, and OEM gaming PCs under one ecosystem.

The next version of Xbox hardware might not follow the usual console model. Instead, it might have three hardware tiers for consoles, handhelds, and OEM PCs, all within the same ecosystem. According to leaks about Xbox Helix, Microsoft could start this plan as early as 2027, with the Xbox Magnus chip at the heart of the platform.
The console accounts for more than 80% of Xbox's revenue, so this is and will be the backbone of the business going forward. The next-gen Xbox Helix console, powered by a custom AMD Magnus SoC with advanced ray-tracing pipelines, is designed as a hybrid device that combines the native console experience with the freedom of PC gaming.

The leaked specs suggest it will be a beast, targeting 60 fps, up to 120 fps, at high-end PC-quality settings, with a custom NPU that will rival something like the PSSR on the PlayStation 5 Pro. Project Helix might finally deliver a solid 60 fps with ray tracing on consoles. Since it will be a hybrid, we can expect a unified dashboard that runs across all next-gen devices, including cloud.
The current Xbox mode will be significantly improved, and the Xbox storefront will be front and center on this device. You will be able to install and launch your PC games from other apps, including Steam and Epic, but their storefronts will not be there. Something similar to the Xbox Ally devices could be used, although this remains uncertain.
A console lives and dies by the games it has. Based on leadership's messaging and emerging leaks, we could be looking at games launching alongside the new Xbox. Leadership wants killer exclusives to drive sales of the new Xbox consoles.
We are looking at a very real scenario where games such as Wolverine 3 or Elder Scrolls 6 could launch alongside this exclusively on Xbox platforms. Not only would that drive Helix sales because it would be the best place to play them, but it could also increase overall Xbox console sales, since both would be cross-gen titles.
OEM Xbox PCs Could Expand the Market
Asus could build a streamlined, small-form-factor hybrid console or box for $500, while Razer could build a very high-end 5090-sort hybrid console box for $1,500. This is how they reach consumers at multiple price points. Steam Machine is very expensive for its specs, and this is how Microsoft goes after the entire PC market, from low-end to high-end console PCs.
This will invite the entire PC audience to some of the biggest games in the world, such as Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft, on the Xbox Store. This changes the entire next-gen gaming landscape. Xbox already has partner devices such as the Xbox Ally X and the Xbox Ally, and we can play Xbox on the go through them. However, the software still needs work, and Xbox games need to be playable there.
Microsoft is working on full backward compatibility, and we can expect an official first-party Xbox handheld device a year or two after the launch of Xbox Helix, probably in 2028 or 2029, with the complete Xbox console library running on local hardware from Xbox One to Xbox Series consoles.

Microsoft could be going after its competition very aggressively.
Phil has spoken openly about working on a handheld, which was shelved last year. However, it's not dead, and if these leaks are to be believed, the official Xbox handheld is still on the table and much closer than expected. Sony's CEO recently said they are still very unsure about the PlayStation 6 release date, potentially giving Xbox Project Helix a runway at launch to gain a next-gen lead.
While Helix remains in the high-end console space, the other variants can target the low- and high-end PC and console markets. Microsoft could therefore target multiple segments of the gaming market through a single Xbox ecosystem.
Phil's plan is still moving forward, but Asha will introduce new aspects, such as exclusive games or a platform-first approach, and market it accordingly. Everything could change over the coming 5 years. If leaks within the supply chain are already emerging, next-gen could start in the holiday season of 2027, although the hardware crisis remains a factor that could affect timing and strategy.
