Marvel's Midnight Suns Delayed For Second Time

Firaxis and 2K Games delay launch of card-based Marvel game.

News by AlexJohn on  Aug 09, 2022

Developed by Firaxis and published by 2K Games, Marvel's Midnight Suns is a turn-based tactical RPG "set in the darker side of the Marvel Universe". Unfortunately, Marvel's Midnight Suns can now be added to the extensive, and ever-growing, list of video games delayed in 2022. Firaxis announced the delay on Twitter, saying that they are using the time to deliver "the best possible experience for our fans", and calling the game "easily the biggest" they have ever made.

Marvel's Midnight Suns was previously delayed in November 2021 due to Firaxis wanting to "add more story, cinematics, and overall polish" to the game, and in June 2022 it was announced that the game would release on October 7th. Two months later, however, Firaxis and 2K Games have delayed Marvel's Midnight Suns again, but have not provided a new release date. The game will reportedly "launch this fiscal year" on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; and "at a later date" on last-gen consoles.

First announced at Gamescom in 2021, Marvel's Midnight Suns is set to be a unique installment in Marvel's catalog of games. As the Hunter, the player must team up with both familiar and obscure faces from Marvel comics to defeat the villainous witch Lilith and her demonic army. Having been awoken by Hydra and corrupted the likes of the Hulk, Venom, the Scarlett Witch, and Sabertooth, the Mother of Demons is set on world domination in this adaptation of the 1990s comic book storyline Midnight Sons.

The combat in Marvel's Midnight Suns requires tactics and planning, combining both card-based abilities, positioning, and environmental interactions to get the best results. The three card classes are Attack Abilities, Skill Abilities, and Heroic Abilities. There are also Hero Combo Abilities that can also be unlocked by building friendships with the members of the Midnight Suns.

The hero roster includes a mix of iconic Marvel Comics characters and more obscure supernatural heroes. The team consists of Iron Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Blade, Captain America, Magik, Nico Minoru/ Sister Grimm, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Dr. Strange, and the player-controlled Hunter. As is typical with the Scarlett Witch, Wanda Maximoff has been promoted as both a hero and villain in the game's marketing. Orbiting a morally grey area between the sides of good and evil, there is a good chance that her loyalties shift over the course of the story.

Finally, Marvel's Midnight Suns' RPG elements come into play at The Abbey. The Midnight Suns' fortress base, The Abbey is hidden in a pocket dimension and acts as a hub between missions where the player can build friendships with their team members, upgrade and unlock new ability cards, select missions, and more.

Marvel's Midnight Suns' will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
