You can now be sure that both Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be available on the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. Fans are excited that the Final Fantasy series is coming back to Nintendo hardware, but they are also curious about how well these ambitious and graphically demanding RPGs will run on the new console.

Fans are sure that Final Fantasy VII Remake will work well on the Switch 2. However, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is more difficult. Even on the PlayStation 5, Rebirth had some performance issues, especially in Performance mode, where the graphics were clearly less good.

In spite of these problems, Rebirth kept a steady 60 FPS for most of the game. One time that the frame rate dropped noticeably was during a fierce battle on Gilgamesh Island, where a lot of summons and spell effects made the screen look crazy. The real problem, though, was the visual compromises. Character models, environments, and draw distances all looked fuzzy at times.

If the powerful PS5 had trouble keeping Rebirth's graphics true to life, it's only natural to wonder how well the Switch 2 will play the game. Rebirth has already been optimized for PC, and it is currently running on the Steam Deck, which could be a good thing. Different users have different experiences with how well Valve's handheld works, but the fact that Rebirth works on similar portable hardware could mean that a Switch 2 port is possible.

CS1's development team has also been hard at work on Final Fantasy VII projects for various platforms. The team has a lot of experience with optimization since Part 3 is still being worked on, a PC port of Rebirth is done, and Switch 2 versions of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth are being made. If the lessons learned from previous ports are put to good use, the Switch 2 versions could be a good time.

When Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth come out on Switch 2, people naturally start to wonder what will happen to Final Fantasy VII Part 3. Square Enix would like the game to come out at the same time on as many platforms as possible, such as PS5, Switch 2, PC, and maybe even Xbox. However, because the publisher has had timed exclusivity deals with Sony in the past, Part 3 may only be available on PlayStation at first before being released on other platforms.

Still, collections of more than one game have been around before. Later, a Final Fantasy VII trilogy pack could come out that includes Final Fantasy VII Remake, Rebirth, and Part 3. This would let players enjoy the whole series on a single platform. Square Enix has already released a Remake + Rebirth twin pack for PC and PS5, so it's very likely that a similar deal will be made for the Switch 2.

Aside from the technical issues, the fact that Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth are on Switch 2 alone shows that Square Enix is changing how they do things. If the Final Fantasy VII project is moving to Nintendo's ecosystem, it's likely that other mainline Final Fantasy games will do the same.

This change would help the franchise with one of its biggest problems: Exclusivity. Many fans couldn't play Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth because they were only available on PS5. An approach that covers more than one platform could greatly increase sales and engagement, as we saw when Rebirth came out on PC after its debut on PlayStation. If Remake and Rebirth do well on the Switch 2, Square Enix might be more likely to keep doing things this way in the future.

Fans of Final Fantasy are very happy that AAA games are coming back to Nintendo consoles. The upcoming games will bring more people into the franchise, whether they are newcomers who have been waiting for the chance to play Remake or longtime fans who want to play it twice on the Switch 2.

Some questions still need to be answered about performance and optimization, but Square Enix has always done their best to make sure things run smoothly. Fans can't wait to see how Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth work on Nintendo's new hardware as more information comes out in the coming months.
