The upcoming Fallout TV series will not directly adapt any of the games and will instead be its own story within the Fallout universe according to Todd Howard. This means that you should not expect the Amazon Fallout series to have the same plot as Fallout 3, Fallout 4, or any of the others.

Todd Howard confirmed this during a podcast interview with Lex Fridman. The podcast itself is about a lot more than just the upcoming Fallout TV series, but it is probably the most unique thing discussed. According to Howard: “When people wanted to make a movie, they wanted to tell the story of Fallout 3 or tell the story of Fallout 4, and it was meh. For this it was, 'hey let's do something that exists within the world of Fallout.’”

Essentially, this adaptation will do what all of the games have done, because none of the games are based on any of the other games, and they all have their own distinct maps, narratives, and characters. This series will simply do the same, and because of this, it may actually be able to avoid many of the pitfalls of video game adaptations. They usually fail because they are attempting to adapt gameplay into film, and gameplay is good in games, not in film. So, this might be good. Or at least it has the chance to be good.

At present, there is very little additional information aside from an image Amazon released back in late October on Twitter and a brief trailer, but this should be good news as it means something new and unique can be done. In addition, Bethesda is involved to some degree.

Only a few weeks ago, a fantastic fan-made trailer was also released, and if the series can be anything like that thing, then it should be great. So, let’s hope they don’t ruin it!
