Tim Schafer has been a video game designer behind some of the most critically acclaimed games of all time, such as Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, and Day of the Tentacle, and also less acclaimed titles like Brütal Legend and the second part of Broken Age. However, his over 30 years in the industry has finally resulted in him being inducted into the AIAS Hall of Fame.
The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, aka the AIAS, officially announced that Tim Schafer, who is also the founder and studio head of Double Fine Productions, will be the latest inductee into the Hall of Fame. He will be inducted during the 26th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards Ceremony on 23 February 2023. A day prior to the event, he will be interviewed in a fireside chat by Chandana Ekanayake from Outerloop Games. The interview will no doubt focus on his long and illustrious, although often bumpy, career in the video game industry.
The AIAS Hall of Fame includes other incredibly big names from the video game industry, such as the 2016 induction of Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding fame or the 2014 induction of Dan and Sam Houser of Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption fame. Tim Schafer will be joining some rather illustrious company after his induction is finalized.
Events such as this, while effectively an elaborate form of award ceremony, are still good for showcasing those who have made some kind of a significant contribution to the video game industry and art form. It doesn’t necessarily matter in the grand scheme of things, but its good to see that someone who makes much more entertaining, indie-adjacent, less supposedly serious AAA games than some of the other inductees got to be highlighted this time around.
