NetherRealm Might Have Just Teased Mortal Kombat 12

NetherRealm's gratitude video for Mortal Kombat fans includes a cheeky Mortal Kombat teaser.

Time sure does fly by. It has been a whopping 30 years since the first ever release of the brutal fighting game franchise Mortal Kombat. With more than 15 video game entries, spinoffs, movies and much more, Mortal Kombat is still going strong with its never-ending care of its creators and fanbase. To show respect to its fans for being loyal, series developer NetherRealm published a new video that included big thanks from everyone who worked on the series.

What caught people’s attention in the video is that, in the end, series Co-Creator Ed Boon appreciated the fans for the support and added “We have not done yet.” The video then cuts to what appears to look like sand particles falling down from a hole in a pitch-black, empty space. These sand particles get very highly detailed, and explode into smaller bits. It is quite strange to guess what that actually means, as it could mean absolutely anything. Of course it is about the series’ next installment, Mortal Kombat 12, but it is quite bizarre to make out the meaning of that little teaser.

Our guesses would be the theme of the next Mortal Kombat, such as beaches or deserts, or a new character to the series, making its first appearance and having the mighty sand as their own weapon of choice. As you know, Mortal Kombat is no stranger to including god-like magical powers to its universe, so it's easy to assume one of the characters might have to do something with sand.

Another speculation we have in our mind is the sand and glass-like structure looking like an hourglass, referencing the time ticking away from Mortal Kombat 12’s release. Still, we have no clue about what exactly NetherRealm meant with the teaser, we shall wait and see what they actually have up their sleeves this time around.

Even though we haven’t heard anything substantial on Mortal Kombat 12 since the release of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, but if you do the math based on the release dates of all the Mortal Kombat games, NetherRealm Studios publishes them after every four years. So, considering Mortal Kombat 11 was published in 2019, we can surely hope Mortal Kombat 12 to be published in Q4 of 2023, if not, it will surely be in Q1 of 2024. Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 series fans already have their fair share of joy with the latest updates on the game, so why not some joy for the Mortal Kombat fans, who are undoubtedly significantly higher in numbers.
