Oddworld: Soulstorm Now An Epic Games Store Exclusive

Oddworld creator reveals that Oddworld: Soulstorm PC versions are exclusive to the Epic Games Store

Epic Games Store exclusive reached an all-time high in aggression after the Ooblets were attacked for their deal. Their approach was very poor but the community response was just as bad, with threats and misinformation being spread about the developers. Now, Oddworld: Soulstorm has joined the Epic Games Store exclusive list and the creator, Lorne Lanning decided to make a public statement about the decision.

The letter is seen above and explains why they decided with this. Stating that despite the passion and support from their fans it wasn't enough. "As an indie publisher, we must evaluate partnerships that will help us achieve our goals while protecting our vision for Soulstorm and the quintology."

This is a valid response. Steam still takes a great cut from indie publishers and developers and while Oddworld is a big IP many indie developers end up getting swallowed by the store. Covered in asset flips that bury their projects deep. Some have decided to go to the Nintendo Switch, with Nintendo launch dozens of Indie games for the Switch starting now until 2020.

Still, many argue that Epic's unfriendly consumer practices and store lacking in basic features are splitting the PC gaming marketplace. There's a valid argument for both sides but for indie developers, it's hard to get angry for this choice. A mere dozen sales can determine whether a small studio makes enough to survive or collapse.
