An NCSoft CEO interview not too long ago provided some important information on Aion 2, verifying it will have a less aggressive pay-to-win model than games like Lineage or Throne and Liberty, with more emphasis on PvE but still including PvP and RvR components.
Financial hopes are more modest, predicting the game will generate perhaps a third to a fourth of the yearly earnings of Lineage 2M and Lineage W, probably owing to its move from mobile to PC-exclusive production. On the 29th, the following livestream will explore gameplay and monetization more.
A recent discussion with one of NCSoft's senior managers presented some intriguing information about Aion 2, providing fans a better sense of what to look forward to from the next game. The game's monetization model was one of the main topics covered.
While it will still include some pay-to-win aspects, the CEO noted that the approach would be more balanced than that of other games in NCSoft's roster, including the Lineage series. Though there will still be a significant focus on PvP and RvR fighting later in the game, Aion 2's other design philosophy, which emphasizes more PvE content than its predecessors, explains part of this.
Regarding potential game revenues, NCSoft offered a rather cautious forecast: they expect Aion 2 to produce roughly one-third to one-fourth of the yearly revenue that Lineage 2M and Lineage W in Korea bring in. It's important to remember that those titles are mobile games, which, of course, offer greater revenue because of their more general accessibility and larger player base.
Originally intended as a mobile game as well, Aion 2 was shifted and is now scheduled to release solely for PC. Since PC games usually do not reach the same commercial level as major mobile successes, that change in direction probably accounts for the difference in financial expectations. This decision perhaps came since Throne and Liberty didn't do too well on consoles.
An official livestream is also set for 8 p.m. on the 29th of this month. KR time (7 a.m. EDT) is expected to address monetization more thoroughly and highlight fresh gaming footage.
