Battleborn officially dies in 2021

Battleborn is an excellent example of why release dates matter. The game was praised for its colorful characters and MOBA gameplay but was immediately overshadowed by Blizzard's Overwatch that released weeks later. The player base dropped and the game died but was still playable. Now, Battleborn has reached the end with the game now going offline this January 2021.
[1/3] Today we have begun the process of gradually sunsetting Battleborn. Starting February 24, 2020, you will no longer be able to purchase virtual currency for use in the game.

Battleborn's "sunsetting" phase will start on February 24th. On this day the game's premium currency will be taken out from the game but can still be earned. On January 2021, the game's servers will be shut down completely and make the game unplayable to owners.
Gamers have asked about the single-player and if it'll still be playable. To which 2K has not responded.
I guess rumors that Battleborn would go free-to-play one day have gone out the window. Perhaps publisher 2K weighed the options and decided against it.
