Dissecting the GTA V Trailer
We break it down so you don't have to.

We are a mere 18 days from the launch of one of the most anticipated titles of 2013, Grand Theft Auto V, and yesterday, Rockstar Games released the official trailer. Today, I take a look at that trailer with excruciating detail, and break down everything inside it.
Right off the bat, we see the three main characters, Michael, Trevor, and Franklin arguing in a room. Michael is lamenting about how a few weeks ago he was happily lounging by his pool. The trailer flashes back to Franklin and Michael sitting by his pool, and the water effects are some of the most realistic I have ever seen in a game. This game looks like it should be a next-gen title, we're six seconds into the minute long trailer and I'm already blown away by the detail work that Rockstar has put into this.
In the flashback, Michael tells Franklin that he's retired. Obviously not as the very next scene shows the three of them (or possibly others, as we know we can hire additional teammates to join in on the bank heists) rushing into Blaine County Savings Bank. We hear Michael talking about how his "psychotic best friend" shows up out of nowhere to torture him over "mistakes he made over a decade ago", and the trailer shows Trevor bashing his head against some pallets screaming "nobody tells me what I want!".
We can only assume from this right now, that ten plus years ago Michael and Trevor had a job go very badly. The action in the trailer continues as we get a shot of one of the robbers shooting out a camera in the bank. Then, we see this: We get to blow the door of a safe.
This bank heist is already way more intense than the one in Grand Theft Auto IV, one of my favorite missions in that game, and I'm looking forward to seeing a whole lot more of this in GTA V.
We cut to a scene where a balding man with glasses in a wheelchair asks Michael if he's back in the game. Michael says "I guess", and Trevor couldn't be happier. We cut back to the bank heist and see someone kicking a cell door open. Then we get a wide shot of the Vinewood sign (parody of the Hollywood sign), showing a large portion of Los Santos in the background.
Cut to this scene where the team, obviously larger than just the 3 main characters are plotting the heist, and we also get to see the one real part with Franklin speaking in the trailer, as he snubs an associate of his for going legit, saying "...401k's, tax returns and all that..." with a great look of disdain on his face.
The next scene we have is a car chase in the rain; presumably we'll be the ones driving the red sports car, which sort of resembles a Ferrari. It cuts quickly back to Michael planning the heist again, saying "we're going to move quick, and we're going to keep cool".
Then Trevor spazzes out. He says it's his job and his score, so get your own (to Michael). We also see him going crazy in a personal submarine and ripping a briefcase from Michael's hands.
The video cuts to a woman, who we presume to be Michael's girlfriend or wife, screaming at him that he is a pathetic psychopath and we see him struggling in his pool, fully dressed. Perhaps someone threw him in there, not really sure of the context. At this point we see someone jump out of a plane with a parachute on, which is probably going to be way more fun than it looks once we actually have a chance to do it.
After that we see a scene with a very heavily armored robber running down the street towards some explosions with a mini-gun. Well, as fast as one can run with all that armor and a mini-gun. A helicopter flies past and the trailer cuts to Franklin riding a motorcycle on a bridge. Perhaps it is a shot of the golden gate bridge, I’m not entirely sure.
We see the inside of an elevator shaft on fire with the three in it for a split second when it moves back to the three and the man in the wheelchair joking about a group hug, and another mini-gun shot for a second when we get to the finale of the trailer.
On a different bridge than the one I mentioned before, we see explosions, lens flares, and most importantly a jet landing a major air strike on the bridge to close out the video. How freaking cool is that going to be? For only being one minute worth of the game, the trailer did exactly what a trailer should do, it made everyone who saw it want to play this game and live in this world.
Grand Theft Auto V comes out on September 17th.
