New ELDEN RING Update Targets Crashes and Loading Issues After Major Content Drop

FromSoftware focuses on stability with a new patch designed to fix crashes, loading failures, and performance problems across the game.

ELDEN RING has received another update, but this one takes a very different approach from the larger content drops that have recently expanded the game. Instead of introducing another major gameplay feature or adding new bosses, FromSoftware is focusing on fixing some of the technical problems that players have been running into.

The update addresses several different causes of crashes, including issues that can happen around loading screens. It also targets the frustrating frozen white screen problem that can prevent players from properly getting into the game.

For anyone who has encountered the white screen issue, it can be particularly frustrating because it occurs before you can even get into your session.

You launch ELDEN RING expecting to return to the Lands Between, only to find yourself stuck on a screen that does not progress. There’s not much you can do at that stage, since the game hasn’t fully loaded yet.

The update also includes broader stability improvements alongside gameplay performance fixes and other minor adjustments. FromSoftware has not provided a huge list explaining every individual performance change, so this update is not the kind of patch where you should expect a particular weapon animation or location to suddenly work completely differently.

The timing of this update also makes sense when you look at what ELDEN RING received previously. The last major update was considerably more ambitious and introduced the Tarnished Pack alongside the new Nintendo Switch 2 edition. The additional content was also made available separately on PlayStation, XBOX, and PC.

Along with that release came some of the more obvious additions, such as the introduction of two new starting classes. The Idis Knight is made for a lighter fighting style and higher dexterity, whereas the Heavy Knight is built for heavier equipment and a more defensive, powerful combat arrangement.

These classes give players different options when beginning a new character, offering a fresh way to play through the early game. Their gear isn’t permanently locked into character creation, either. Players can also obtain this equipment later through merchants or by exploring the world.

Existing characters can get the equipment for these new classes from merchants or by finding it while exploring.

That means you don’t have to necessarily start an entire new playthrough just to experience the equipment that comes with the new classes. That fits in well with how ELDEN RING handles gear, where you can find a new weapon or piece of equipment while out exploring.

The previous update also introduced new ways to customize Torrent. Three new spectral steed appearances were added, giving players the ability to change the look of their mount without affecting the core gameplay.

The Tree Sentinel version can be found in Stormveil Castle, while the Silver of Carian version is located in Liurnia of the Lakes. The Night Cavalry version can be discovered in the Altus Plateau, and once an appearance has been obtained, you can change Torrent's look through an option at a Site of Grace.

These additions do not entirely change how exploration works, but they give players another reason to revisit areas they may already know extremely well. Torrent is such an important part of traveling through the Lands Between that giving players different visual options for the mount adds some variety without interfering with character builds or combat balance.

It is a relatively simple form of customization, but it fits naturally into a game where exploration is such a major part of the experience. Players who spend a lot of time traveling across the open world can therefore make the journey feel a little different without changing the underlying mechanics.

The earlier update also introduced two new NPC invasion events. One takes place in Caelid, while the other happens in Leyndell, Royal Capital. There is an important progression requirement for the Leyndell invasion, however, because the event will no longer occur once the area changes into Leyndell, Ashen Capital.

Alongside the new content, the previous release included several balance changes affecting equipment and abilities from the Realm of Shadow.

Spells and incantations received adjustments as well, giving some abilities changes to their casting times, power, or behavior. Meteorite of Ael, for example, received a reduction to its casting time, making it quicker to use.

Several incantations received adjustments too. Feather of the Divine Bird had its power increased, while Flame received a larger attack range. Rain of Fire was also made more powerful, giving players who use the incantation another reason to consider it during combat.

These changes were part of the broader balance work included with the previous content release rather than the focus of the newest technical update. The latest patch is instead concentrating much more heavily on stability and performance.

Player-versus-player combat also received some adjustments in the previous update. Rakshasa's Great Katana was changed so that its user takes more damage from other players while attacking, while Rugalea's Roar had its power reduced against other players.

Rotten Breath and Ekzykes's Decay also received changes to their hit reactions, reducing the amount of time opponents remain unable to move after being struck. These changes were aimed at specific interactions rather than representing a complete overhaul of Elden Ring's PvP system.

There were also several bug fixes involving Great Katana weapons.

Critical hits using Great Katana weapon types had been dealing less damage than expected against large enemies, and jumping attacks with Great Katana weapons could also be parried in situations where they were not supposed to be. These problems could be noticeable for players using those weapons, especially against larger enemies or in PvP encounters.

PC players received some additional fixes as well. The previous update addressed problems with mouse camera control during NPC conversations, along with an issue involving settings that were not properly restoring certain keyboard and mouse options.

These are smaller problems compared with a major crash, but they can still make the experience frustrating when they repeatedly affect your setup. Together with the broader stability improvements, these fixes show how FromSoftware is continuing to address technical problems across different areas of the game.

When you put the two updates side by side, their different purposes become much clearer. The earlier release was focused on giving players more content, including new classes, weapons, Torrent customization, invasion events, and various balance changes.

The latest update takes the opposite approach by concentrating on the foundation underneath those additions. Instead of adding another layer of content, FromSoftware is working on making sure the existing experience runs properly.

ELDEN RING Witch Fighting

That distinction matters because ELDEN RING has reached a point where players can have entirely unique experiences depending on their platform and setup.

One player might spend hours exploring the Lands Between without encountering a single technical problem, while another could run into a loading issue or crash that completely interrupts a session.

A fix that goes unnoticed by one person can therefore be extremely valuable to someone who has been dealing with the problem repeatedly. Technical updates may not be the most exciting, but they can directly affect how enjoyable the game is.

The decision not to attach another major balance overhaul to this update is also notable. There is no indication of a massive weapon damage rework or sweeping PvP change accompanying this maintenance-focused release.

Instead, FromSoftware is concentrating on getting the current version of ELDEN RING into a cleaner and more dependable state. That is particularly useful for players returning to the game because of the recent content additions.

If you recently started a new character using one of the new classes, went looking for the different Torrent appearances, or simply returned for another playthrough, stability becomes more important than another feature being added.

New content does not mean much if the game crashes while loading or leaves you stuck on a frozen white screen before you can even begin playing. The latest update therefore serves a fairly straightforward purpose: make the experience more reliable so that players can actually enjoy the content that is already available.

It is also worth noting that the Tarnished Pack and this technical update are separate releases.

The last content update introduced new classes, new weapons, Torrent customization options, and invasion events, so players should not expect another round of similar additions with this patch. Instead, the newest release is focused on improving how ELDEN RING runs after those additions were introduced.

Ultimately, the latest ELDEN RING update is less about giving players something new to discover and more about removing problems that can get in the way of the existing experience. Crashes, loading-screen failures, frozen white screens, stability problems, and general performance issues can all turn an otherwise enjoyable session into a frustrating one.

With those areas receiving attention, FromSoftware is effectively refining the game following its more substantial recent content release. The previous update gave the Tarnished more things to do, while this one is focused on making that journey through the Lands Between a little smoother.
