Toyama Gamers Day hosts the King Crab Tournament.
News by Fragnarok on Oct 21, 2020
Toyama Gamers Day begins on October 24th in the Japanese city of Toyama. For this year, the main game tournament will be a Fight Crab competition dubbed King Crab Tournament. 128 players will duke it out over the Nintendo Switch version of the sea themed third-person fighting game. Rather than a cash payout, the grand prize winner will instead receive a hundred local red snow crabs, valued at ¥300,000 (approximately $2,860 USD). Other tournaments at the event will also award crabs and other seafood, including the top Fortnite winners.
While this may seem like a strange prize, it most likely is to circumvent Japan’s e-sports laws which cap prize money at a ¥100,000 pool (around $953 USD). Toyama itself is famous for being a costal fishing city and renowned for its red snow crabs, which makes it an obvious choice for Fight Crab developer Masafumi Onuki to push for such a promotion.
