There are increasing rumors that Sony Santa Monica Studios will soon release a new God of War game based on Greek mythology. This won't be a direct sequel or a simple remake of the first three games, though. Instead, it will be a side story that looks at Kratos's past from a different angle. A new rumor spread around the internet, and people were talking about Kratos and a possible Greek return.

A new leak suggests that Sony is indeed planning to release a God of War spin-off set in Greece. The game could come out later this year. Several reliable insiders talked about a Greek-themed title but didn't say anything about its format or scope. Notably, Jeff Grubb has shot down rumors that this new game will be a remaster of the original trilogy. Instead, he says it's more likely to be a brand-new game that fits in with the Norse saga.

This is especially interesting news since the last two games in the God of War series, God of War (2018) and Ragnarök, have been mostly about Norse mythology. Both of these games have references to Kratos' Greek past. The 2018 game has a vision of Athena, and Ragnarök looks at his relationship with Freya, which was shaped in part by their shared grief over Kratos' family.

The Valhalla DLC added to these connections by bringing back Greek enemies and weapons, such as the famous Blade of Olympus. Even with these references, a full-on return to Greek mythology wasn't thought to be likely until now. There are a number of reasons why a Greek continuation or sequel is not likely at this point.

The main Greek gods were mostly destroyed by the end of God of War II, so there wasn't much room for that story to continue directly. Kratos' story arc in the Norse realms also seems to be ongoing, as he works with Freya and other allies to restore balance. Any trip back to Greece would probably have to deal with important unresolved issues from his past. Because of this, a spin-off or side story seems more likely than a mainline sequel.

One interesting idea is that the new game might show Kratos' early years as a soldier in Sparta, before he became the Ghost of Sparta and then the God of War. This would give players a chance to experience a reimagined origin story, which could be squished into a single game that captures the essence of the original trilogy but updates it with modern storylines and game mechanics. A shortened version of the classic trilogy could make it easier for new players to start playing, since the full trilogy takes more than 30 hours to complete.

The parts of this theory that are already in the current God of War engine give it more weight. The Blades of Chaos and the Blade of Olympus, Kratos's first famous weapons, have been added to new Norse saga games and DLCs. They come with their own set of moves and combos. This existing base could make it easier for Sony Santa Monica to make a game with a Greek theme by using and improving existing enemies, weapons, and environments.

In terms of development, Sony probably likes this approach better than making the whole trilogy over again, which would take a lot of time and money. It would be easier and more strategic to make a single, improved game that retold Kratos' origins. This would bring in new fans and give longtime fans a new way to look at the character's history.

Even though these details haven't been confirmed and are based on leaks, the idea of returning to Greek mythology in the God of War world has already sparked a lot of interest and discussion in the gaming community. Kratos' journey through mythological worlds is far from over, whether the project is a prequel, a reimagining, or a stand-alone spin-off.
