Santa Monica Studio's Next God of War Project Leaked

While fans were let down by God of War's 20th-Anniversary update, it appears that they are working on a brand-new franchise title that will be unveiled and published later this year. Multiple sources are suggesting that fans of the God of War series weren't left empty-handed after all, as a new God of War game will indeed feature a younger Kratos, and he will be returning to his Greek roots. This will surely be a major move for the franchise, giving players access to explore the God of War universe from where Kratos's journey had started.

However, the rumors about a God of War Remastered collection have continued for a while now. Many fans were eager to get a greeting from Santa Monica Studio because the franchise's 20th-Anniversary fell on March 2nd. Though the studio did celebrate the event by releasing in-game cosmetic content, a tribute movie, and armor packs for God of War Ragnarök, no remastered collection was displayed.

The absence of any major announcement could explain Santa Monica's current involvement with developing a brand-new God of War game for the PlayStation 5 that will feature Kratos in Greece. According to Push Square, this project is a side-story adventure with a younger Kratos incarnation rather than only a remastering effort. Though Bluesky will not be a remastering collection, industry insider Jeff Grubb has mentioned that a Greek God of War project is under development right now.

However, Grubb brought up an additional interesting point, saying that the game may have a smaller scope than Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales compared to a mainstream God of War release. Rather than the anticipated massive AAA sequel, this points to the possibility of a standalone, portable experience for the next installment, something of similar scale to God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla DLC. Tom Henderson, another gaming industry insider, confirmed his claims.

Henderson's insight also supports the claim that Santa Monica Studio is now developing a game featuring younger Kratos returning to Greece. Nevertheless, other sources have yet to confirm this information. This game may be like earlier successful Sony projects, such as Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which gave the Uncharted brand a major new element without publishing a full-scale numbered edition.

The way Santa Monica Studio plans to resurrect the younger form of Kratos while maintaining the integrity of the narrative raises one of the most important questions regarding this claimed endeavor. Returning to Kratos's early years would be fascinating, particularly given that his beginnings in the Greek pantheon have already been well covered in earlier games.

Conversely, should this project be a new original tale instead of a remake, it may fill in some yet unexplored historical voids for God of War. It might explore Kratos's early years as a Spartan warrior before the events of the last game more closely. On the other hand, it might even find long-lost tales connecting Kratos's past to his present hunt across the Norse realm.

Whatever the route, Kratos's original narrative implies that a return to Greek mythology may bring up well-known sites, enemies, and even clearly identifiable gods and mortals. Given the popularity of all these reports, fans are eager to know when Sony and Santa Monica Studio will eventually make the game release date public.
