Rogue Factor, the developer behind Necromunda and Mordheim, is working on a new title: Hell is Us. While both of their previous games were turn-based RPGs, this time, they've taken a somewhat enigmatic approach with this new title. This third-person action-adventure game is set in semi-open worlds and has horror elements to some extent. Nacon will publish the game, while the idea came from Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, who has worked on games like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.
Jacques-Belletête revealed in an interview that Hell is Us is a brand-new IP. The game is currently under development with a group of skilled developers using Unreal Engine 5. Given the game's title, it's safe to assume that Hell is Us will also tussle with horror to some extent, where the central premise will revolve around a civil war and the creatures that appear to inhabit the area. There will be a lot of open-world exploration, so you can see where you're going without a map, landmarks, or task markers.
Hell is Us will be an open-world exploration RPG with a brutal melee combat mechanism. You search for answers to your questions, and the game takes you through a vast world and puts you in encounters with strange-looking creatures. Rogue Factor claims that you will be entirely on your own in this game without any sort of map, compass, or quest marks. The basic premise is to plunge players headfirst into the middle of a civil war that splits the nation and leaves its victims vulnerable to the mystical creatures that feed on the decaying remnants of a broken civilization.
Our best guess is that as a sword-wielding protagonist, your mission will be to save this cursed land from these creatures and ultimately stop the war. No matter the case, the Calamity—the chaos that has brought forth these strange creatures—is a major plot point in Hell is Us. You'll be armed with an ancient sword and drone on your journey to discover the origins of these creatures. Along the way, you'll also observe the aftermath of a civil war that has split the land apart and turned it unstable.
Rogue Factor has not yet shared any gameplay footage from Hell is Us, so it's still unclear what kinds of action will appear during the gameplay. But since free exploration is a major selling point, there won't likely be any leaner gameplay involved. The game heavily emphasizes creative writing and level design to give you freedom of choice and encourage gut feelings. According to the studio's statements, the game will center around two main features. You'll be able to use melee weapons like swords, spears, and axes in combat.
Rogue Factor hasn't made much noise since their last release, Necromunda: Underhive Wars, which didn't please the fans much. So it's safe to assume that Hell is Us will be their comeback project. And even though the developers stated that it will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox One X/S, and PC through Steam in 2025, it's still difficult to pinpoint an exact release date. Keep an eye on the Upcoming Video Game Releases in 2025 list, and we'll keep you posted whenever we find anything solid.
