The third chapter of the widely renowned horror puzzle series Little Nightmares is on the way. Originally scheduled for release in 2024, the game was later scheduled for the 2025 release. Fans who had been anticipating their return to the Nowhere were somewhat upset by the delay.
The project was taken over by Supermassive Games from Tarsier Studios, a developer of narrative-driven horror games. Although Supermassive has worked on Little Nightmares II, they lack the expertise necessary to tackle the production of a full-fledged sequel. The distinctive nature and gameplay of the series may just take them a little longer to adjust to.
That, however, is unrelated to the game's delay. Its introduction of an online co-op by Supermassive Games is the reason for the delay. Since this is Little Nightmares' first co-op feature, it will exponentially increase the challenges of the development process. This cooperative online play will be a major feature of the game.
To make it through the terrifying Nowhere, you and a buddy can form a team online to take control of Low and Alone. If you'd rather not play with other players, you can still play with an AI buddy. So, there's little doubt that the lengthy testing and refining needed to guarantee a fun and seamless co-op experience is one factor adding to the holdup. Of course, there's also the constant need to maintain the game's high standards.
Since announcing the delay, Supermassive hasn't posted any other details, and fans keep on asking when Little Nightmares III will be released. It would seem that the delay is also related to how Supermassive is making some alterations since Little Nightmares III is also broadening the series' scope in terms of settings.
All the past adventures took place mostly in limited areas, such as ships or schools; this time around, we'll be exploring a vast and varied environment, complete with twisted cities and barren deserts. Supermassive is taking this additional time to guarantee that Little Nightmares III meets the high standards set by its predecessors.
However, Supermassive Games is working on another survival horror title called Directive 8020, which is also scheduled to be released in 2025. We have a hunch that this game will be pushed to 2026 so that Nightmares III can be released before Halloween this year. Since Halloween generates a lot of publicity for the horror genre, any studio worth their salt would aim for the release windows in September and October to capitalize on it.
Plus, that's when Supermassive has traditionally launched their games. Until Dawn (2024) remake was launched last year during Halloween. The Dark Pictures Anthology, their biggest title, was published by BANDAI NAMCO and launched in October 2021. Since BANDAI NAMCO will also be publishing Little Nightmares III, the scenario is quite comparable. Little Nightmares III could be released in the last week of October 2025, with Halloween 2025 being the unofficial deadline for this game.
However, despite how upsetting it is, we can only hope that this delay serves a higher purpose. A little more baking time could be just what Little Nightmares III needed. We're eager to see what Supermassive Games has in store for us when the game finally arrives in October 2025, if not earlier.
