Microsoft Buys Minecraft

Microsoft buys Mojang for 2.5 billion.

The rumors that Microsoft would purchase Minecraft are true. In a press release Mojang announced that it had been acquired by Microsoft for $2.5 billion. Following the deal, all three of Mojang's original founders, including Markus "Notch" Persson, will be leaving Mojang.

In a blog post on Xbox Wire Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's Xbox division, talks about the acquisition and confirms that Minecraft's official convention, Minecon, will continue next year under Microsoft's supervision.

Despite the deal, the PC, Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Vita, iOS, and Android editions of Minecraft will be supported and developed as they currently are.

Minecraft launched in 2011 on PC and eventually speard to iOS and Android. In 2012 Minecraft was released on Xbox 360, and a PS3 iteration was later released in 2013. Later Minecraft was ported to Xbox One and PS4. Since its release Minecraft has sold over 54 million copies worldwide on all platforms.
