With Sony reportedly debating a full-scale event, speculation heats up around long-awaited exclusives like Marvel's Wolverine, Ghost of Yōtei, and Naughty Dog's mysterious new IP. New rumors in the industry suggest that Sony may be preparing for a long-awaited comeback with a full PlayStation Showcase this summer. Some of the most famous PlayStation announcements took place during showcases, which last happened in May 2023. This has left fans eagerly waiting for big news and new directions from the company.

The first PlayStation Showcase took place in June 2020, which was a big change in how Sony made big announcements. Smaller State of Play streams usually focus on specific games or updates. The PlayStation Showcase, on the other hand, is a bigger, more cinematic show that shows what's coming next from Sony's biggest first-party studios. Big games like Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon: Forbidden West, and Demon's Souls Remake came out that year, setting the tone for the PlayStation 5 era.

Since then, Sony has only held a few more shows: one in May 2023, one in September 2021, and one in September 2020. Many people thought the 2023 event wasn't very good because it focused too much on independent games, third-party games, and live-service multiplayer experiences, while big studios like Naughty Dog and Santa Monica Studio were not present at all. Fans were left wondering what happened to PlayStation, known for their blockbuster single-player games.

Now, there is hope again. Reports indicate that Sony is currently debating whether to hold a full-on showcase this summer or stick with a more conservative State of Play. Even though Sony hasn't said anything official yet, the fact that a full showcase is even being thought about gets fans excited, which may be a good thing.

Many of Sony's top studios haven't said much in recent years, which has led many people to think that they've been busy working on new projects that they haven't told anyone about yet. And since most big games take three to five years to make, now might be a great time for an event with lots of announcements.

So, what could a 2025 showcase actually have? Marvel's Wolverine by Insomniac Games is at the top of many people's wish lists. It was first teased in 2021, but we still don't know how to play it. More than three years have passed since its announcement, and a fresh trailer—or, better yet, actual gameplay—seems overdue.

Ghost of Yōtei, the rumored follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, is also a strong contender. It is said to be coming out in 2025. If that release date stays the same, summer 2025 would be a great time to show off the game's gameplay.

Then there's Naughty Dog, the company that made The Last of Us games. While most of the public's attention has been on the hit HBO adaptation and some stalled multiplayer projects, they have recently confirmed that they are working on a new IP called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. There are also rumors that Naughty Dog is working on a second project. Could there also be quiet work going on for The Last of Us Part III? A showcase would be a great place to hint at both.

Santa Monica Studio, which is best known for the God of War series, finished Ragnarök in 2022. They are now rumored to be working on a brand-new IP, which could be sci-fi. A movie-style teaser or title drop might be enough to get people excited.

At the same time, Guerrilla Games is said to be working on a multiplayer co-op game set in the Horizon universe, and Housemarque, the company that made Returnal, has already hinted at a mysterious project they call Saros. This year has been promised as the year of the gameplay debut, which makes it more likely that it will be included in any upcoming event. Of course, live-service games like FairGames from Haven Studios will also likely be there. This is in line with Sony's larger, but sometimes controversial, push into multiplayer and ongoing content models.

Since the PlayStation 5 is now in the middle of its life cycle, a summer showcase would be more than just a way to get people excited. It would also be a smart way for Sony to re-engage fans and make its case for the future. The 2016 showcase is still remembered as a legendary moment in the history of video games. It was known for live orchestras, big surprises like God of War, and a lineup that included Marvel's Spider-Man, Days Gone, and Death Stranding.

That event wasn't just about games; it was also about making a point. And if the PS5 era wants its big moment, Sony may have it this summer. Fans want single-player epics, big reveals, and imaginative stories to come back—everything that made PlayStation a name for high-end games. Sony could answer that call. Now, the only question is whether they will or not.
