Ed Boon has shared another teaser about the upcoming Mortal Kombat 12, and now it is making total sense.

Recently we published a news article about how Mortal Kombat’s creators, NetherRealm, uploaded a video showing their gratitude towards their fans, and at the end of the video, there was a little showcase of what we thought was the teaser of the upcoming Mortal Kombat title. As it turns out, our guesses were true, however, we have pinned our notes to the wrong speculation board by the looks of it.
Series’ Co-Creator Ed Boon has shared a video on Twitter about the new Mortal Kombat with a very clever and nifty video. A clock is ticking away second by second, but when it comes to 12, it glitches out and jumps to 1 instead. Now there are a lot of things to unpack here, the major one being Mortal Kombat might skip 12 entirely and become “Mortal Kombat”, or “Mortal Kombat 1”. In short, it is likely that they’ll reboot the Mortal Kombat series altogether. We have seen a recent example of it, something that Volition Studios have done (and failed miserably) to the Saints Row franchise. If that’s the case, let’s hope they can handle it pretty well because Volition showcased a lackluster performance on rebooting Saints Row, people might think the same with the newly rebooted Mortal Kombat once it drops.
Our second guess is the fact that there might be an additional, small Mortal Kombat game that plays exactly like the first game, alongside the 12th installment. This addition might keep itself simple, just like the first Mortal Kombat game, while playing similarly to it. But that seems a bit far too stretched. Still, we do not know what they have planned; whatever it is, it must be interesting enough to compete with other upcoming fighting games, such as Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6 on the market.
Or perhaps all these guesses will be thrown out of the window as NetherRealm to release Mortal Kombat 12 on November 1st, 2023. Because judging by the time 4 years gap between each Mortal Kombat release, Mortal Kombat 12 is expected to release in Q3 2023 since Mortal Kombat 11 was released on 2019.
