There hasn't been much excitement for Warner Bros. Games fans recently. After their unsuccessful effort in bringing Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League to life, Rocksteady Studios has now updated us on their upcoming game. There has been very little information on the following DCU projects or the future of its DC games since Warner Bros. Games is going through financial struggles.
The uncertainty surrounding DC's Wonder Woman game, which is allegedly experiencing production issues, has put WB Games in a considerably less favorable spot than Disney Marvel's six confirmed and highly anticipated AAA projects. The future of WB Games is unknown, and the fans are keenly waiting for the next update.
Nevertheless, everything changed last week when Matthew Baloney revealed that WB Games was developing a new game rooted in the Batman world created by Matt Reeves, which would connect to the upcoming Penguin spinoff series. However, in response to a fan's question on Twitter the next day, James Gunn denied the report's integrity.
Both Puck and Matthew Baloney have yet to comment on that since then. Still, it's interesting to remember that James Gunn had previously rejected a rumor about the design of his DC Universe Superman outfit, only to have it confirmed when initial images leaked. So, even with such little evidence, we can't reject that a Batman game starring Matt Reeves is not in the works now.
However, one thing is sure: Rocksteady is working on its next comeback project. According to dozens of developers Jason Schreier spoke with, Rocksteady's founders—Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker—who departed before the game's release to found a new studio called Hundred Star Games—were the ones most responsible for the many behind-the-scenes problems with Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League.
Additionally, Jason mentioned that WB and Rocksteady have effectively banned the live-service shooter, leaving just a tiny team responsible for producing the roadmap material. The remaining devs were assisting Avalanche with Hogwarts Legacy. However, he reassured fans worried about the studio's closure by saying that Rocksteady's management was proposing a single-player game to WB Games.
This possibility of a Justice League game has sparked hope and excitement among fans. Some even speculated that it was a Justice League game designed for single players. Rocksteady began developing this new game in June; thus, the pitching period is over. The information comes from a senior systems programmer at Rocksteady. He changed his LinkedIn page to say he is working on this new, undisclosed project and has left Suicide Squad. Season 4 might be ready by December, and with it, a formal notice on Twitter about the live service game's shutdown, given its rapidity and shortage of new content in the second season's mid-season update.
Other WB studios than Rocksteady have also been moved on to different projects. While we don't know much about the new game, we can probably say it will be single-player based on what Shryer said. Although fans expected to see a new Batman game from Rocksteady, rumor is that the studio is unhappy with the franchise, according to those who have visited.
Rocksteady fans have been begging for a Superman game for the last decade, and here is their chance. They could even develop a game centered on another street hero, like Catwoman or Green Arrow. Similarly, a Teen Titans or The Flash-themed video game might be fantastic. The possibility of these game themes has left fans feeling optimistic and intrigued about the future of DC games. However, if development doesn't begin in June, the game won't be available for quite some time, so we'll just have to wait and see.
