The Abilities you gain are key to doing good in this game

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a very complex game with lots going on. You have a lot of things that you have to handle and manage in order to do well in the game, and with difficulty stacking as you play more, thanks to the progression of tougher enemies based on encounters; you’ll always be on the back foot.

Out of all the things to keep track of, one of the easier things to manage is probably the ability. Abilities are acquired after you win 30 battles with them, allowing you to assign them to others. Naturally, some abilities are exclusive to certain classes. Most abilities can also be mastered after you win 30 more battles, but this can only be done after the territories you control have certain thresholds. A few of the abilities are also not unlocked through classes but rather as a result of events.

Best Abilities

There are a lot of abilities out there, but most are restricted to a specific class, and as a result, any list of best abilities is really dependent on the classes. However, certain abilities elevate some classes from meh to decent and turn decent to good. Here’s a few of them:

Auto-Parry: Probably the best ability in the game. The ability of the Imperial Heavy infantry is available to both genders and does exactly what you think it does. It makes parrying automatic when you have a sword and increases it to 40% when without a sword.

Cashback: The Dancer is a pretty decent class, and one of its abilities, Cashback, is very powerful. It basically restores 25% of the gauge when you act in a linkage. This boost to gauge recovery is great, as you can use that even more now.

All Basic Abilities +1: It also does exactly what you think it does; it boosts the base stats by 1. This goes a long way in making your characters stronger, and the best part? It’s incredibly easy to get. After you time-skip from Gerard’s time, all you have to do is go to his room and examine a portrait of him.

Damage Cut: Unlocked on the Imperial Guard if they’re a female, Damage Cut is another one of the incredible abilities that stand out from the others. This is very good for tanks as it basically gives a 20% chance of completely negating the damage dealt to the character.

Aside from these few, abilities that let you recover BP every turn, reduce the consumption of BP, or otherwise just deal with BP are great to have at hand. They are very versatile and useful for various abilities. A lot of the spells, too, are very expensive to use, and if you see yourself running out a lot, these are the abilities to grab.

Some abilities are good at different points of the game, such as the Shrewd Kitten available to the female thief. This ability basically doubles the drop for materials and tools, something that’s especially essential in the early game. Other abilities like Giant Killer aren't really useful until later on or attainable since they require you to interact with Leon's portrait with the last emperor.
