Who would have guessed that the project that would get Nintendo and Sony to work together would be a film based on The Legend of Zelda?

Nintendo Co. Ltd has announced it will be developing a live-action The Legend of Zelda film with Sony Pictures Entertainment distributing the film worldwide.

Announced in a post on Nintendo's Japanese website, the film will be produced by Nintendo and Arad Productions Incorporated and financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment, with the former funding a majority of the picture.

Zelda Movie, A Legend of Zelda Film

The key talent involved in the film is Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad as producers, with Wes Ball attached as the director. Miyamoto is known as the "father" of Mario and is arguably the face of Nintendo, while Avi Arad is most well known for his production work on notable comic book films, including Spider-man 2, Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse, and Venom. Meanwhile, Wes Ball's most high-profile project was as the director of the Maze Runner trilogy based on the series of novels.

While the post did not mention a release window, Miyamoto did write on X (formerly Twitter) that the film has been in some form of development for "many years now" implying the project may be further along than expected.

This will be Nintendo's second modern film after the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released in April earlier this year. That film, which was co-produced by Universal and Illumination, went on to make $1.36 billion at the global box office and was largely responsible for Nintendo's record-breaking year.

After the success of the Mario movie, The Legend of Zelda is the Nintendo property that makes the most sense for an adaption. While Avi Arad and Wes Ball may not have a flawless track record, Miyamoto's involvement should give fans hope that the movie will live up to the strong legacy of the games it will be based on. Hopefully, fans will not have to wait too long before we receive more info about this highly anticipated film.
