An Old GTA 6 Leak Looks More Credible After Rockstar's Latest Reveals

A rumor that many people dismissed nearly two years ago is gaining fresh attention after Rockstar's trailers, screenshots, and retailer listings appear to line up with several of its most surprising details.

If you rewind the clock about two years, there was one GTA 6 leak that most people either forgot about or completely dismissed. It wasn't the first trailer, a major development leak, or one of the countless fan-made map concepts that spread across the internet.

Instead, it centered around a short video that was allegedly recorded by a friend of Aaron Garbut, the art director at Rockstar, after supposedly being invited to play an early version of GTA 6. The footage spread across social media surprisingly quickly, but it wasn't actually the video that captured everyone's attention.

The footage spread across social media surprisingly quickly, but it was the collection of text messages that actually captured everyone's attention.

Instead, it was the collection of text messages that accompanied it. Those messages claimed GTA 6 would feature a map roughly twice the size of GTA 5, include three major cities, several smaller towns, and a massive inland lake sitting at the center of Leonida.

At the time, those claims sounded almost impossible to believe. Most people assumed it was simply another fake insider trying to capitalize on the growing excitement surrounding GTA 6. Like many gaming rumors, it gradually faded into the background as people waited for Rockstar to officially reveal the game.

Now, nearly two years later, that same leak has suddenly returned to the spotlight. It isn't because someone uncovered new footage or found additional evidence supporting it. Instead, after everything Rockstar has officially revealed over the past year, several of the leak's biggest claims now appear surprisingly consistent with what the studio has shown so far.

When those messages first surfaced, you knew almost nothing about GTA 6. Rockstar hadn't released a trailer, shared screenshots, launched the official website, or even confirmed many of the game's locations. There simply wasn't enough official information available to compare against the leak, making it much easier for people to dismiss nearly everything it claimed.

Fast forward to today, and the situation looks entirely different.

Rockstar has officially introduced Vice City alongside the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga, the Grass Rivers wetlands, beaches, forests, highways, and numerous rural regions spread throughout the state. Rockstar has always described Leonida as a whole state with different regions, cultures, and environments, rather than presenting GTA 6 as a game set only in Vice City.

That shift in Rockstar's messaging has made one of the leak's biggest claims seem far more believable than it once did. Back in 2023, the idea of multiple major locations sounded overly ambitious. Today, after seeing Rockstar's official marketing, that concept fits much more naturally with the direction the game appears to be taking.

Perhaps the biggest example involves the overall map itself. The original leak claimed players would explore a massive state centered around a huge inland lake, with several populated regions surrounding it. At the time, that description was widely mocked because most people assumed GTA 6 would simply recreate Vice City while adding some countryside around it.

Since then, however, Rockstar has released two trailers, dozens of screenshots, and enough environmental details for the GTA mapping community to begin reconstructing Leonida. Based on years of research combining official material with earlier development footage, the community now believes the game includes an enormous inland lake resembling Florida's Lake Okeechobee.

That lake has become one of the most recognizable geographical features on current community-created maps.

Ironically, it also happens to be one of the exact details many people considered the least believable when the original leak first appeared. Rockstar still hasn't officially revealed the complete map layout, but the broader picture now resembles those early descriptions much more closely than many expected.

The discussion surrounding the leak's mention of three major cities has also changed considerably. According to the original messages, Leonida would include three large cities alongside four smaller towns. Rockstar hasn't officially confirmed exactly how many major cities exist within the game, so that information should still be treated as speculation rather than fact.

Even so, nothing Rockstar has shown so far directly contradicts that claim anymore. Vice City is obviously one of the game's largest urban centers, while Port Gellhorn appears to have evolved into a substantial coastal city rather than the small fishing town many initially imagined. Ambrosia also looks considerably larger than expected, featuring factories, neighborhoods, and extensive industrial districts.

Depending on how Rockstar internally classifies each location, the original leak could end up being surprisingly close to reality even if some of its wording wasn't entirely accurate. Two years ago, those descriptions sounded unrealistic. Today, they feel much more plausible simply because Rockstar has revealed so much more about Leonida.

GTA 6 Jason and Lucia in the Club

Another reason this older leak has regained attention is that the GTA community now has significantly more information to compare against it.

The GTA Mapping Project has spent years reconstructing Leonida using the 2022 development footage, official trailers, screenshots, Rockstar's website, and numerous environmental landmarks. Every new reveal has helped refine that map even further.

As more official information has become available, several of the broader themes described in the original leak have continued holding up remarkably well. Instead of becoming less believable over time, which is usually what happens with fake GTA rumors, this particular leak has actually become more convincing with each new reveal.

Recent retailer listings have only added more fuel to that discussion. Multiple retail descriptions portray GTA 6 as Rockstar's biggest, densest, and most ambitious open world to date. They also describe systems that would make Leonida feel much more dynamic than previous Rockstar games.

According to those listings, NPCs will follow their own daily routines, random events will occur naturally throughout the world, businesses will be interactive, weather will influence gameplay, and AI-driven behaviors will create more believable encounters. The descriptions also mention two playable protagonists who can be switched between during free exploration, along with an integrated social media system that helps players discover events, influencers, and hidden side missions through their in-game phones.

None of those retailer listings confirm the original leak by themselves.

However, taken together, they paint a picture of a world that feels considerably larger and more complex than anything Rockstar has attempted before. They reinforce the same general direction described by many of the leak's broader claims.

One detail that repeatedly appears across multiple retailer pages is Rockstar's emphasis on artificial intelligence. Rather than NPCs just wandering the map, the descriptions suggest they will be following advanced routines, reacting naturally to things happening around them and creating situations that are not entirely scripted.

Instead of simply filling Leonida with additional activities, Rockstar appears focused on making the world itself feel more alive. If these descriptions prove accurate, you'll encounter situations that develop naturally rather than relying entirely on scripted events. That approach would make exploration itself much more unpredictable.

The integrated social media system also appears deeper than many initially expected. Previous GTA games largely treated social media as satire, but retailer descriptions suggest Jason and Lucia's phones will constantly display viral videos, local influencers, breaking news, and clues leading to hidden side content. That could make your in-game phone a much more important part of exploring Leonida.

Another rumor currently attracting attention focuses on the game's performance modes.

According to respected Polish journalist Boris Niespielak, Rockstar is targeting both a 30 FPS quality mode and a 60 FPS performance mode for PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series S is reportedly expected to launch with a 30 FPS mode, with a possible 60 FPS option arriving later through updates.

It's important to treat that report carefully. The information reportedly comes from a single anonymous Rockstar source and has not been officially confirmed by the studio. Although Niespielak has built credibility through accurate reports involving CD Projekt Red, he doesn't have the same track record when it comes to Rockstar Games.

Even if the performance rumor ultimately proves accurate, it shouldn't automatically validate every aspect of the older GTA 6 leak. Likewise, several of the leak's original claims still remain completely unverified. Rockstar has never officially stated that GTA 6's map is exactly twice the size of GTA 5, confirmed three major cities or four smaller towns, or provided any precise measurements for the game's world.

The text messages attached to the original video have never been authenticated either.

While the footage itself appeared convincing enough to spread rapidly online, the accompanying claims have remained rumors from the very beginning. No official evidence has ever verified the messages attached to it. That distinction remains just as important today as it was when the leak first surfaced.

The reason this story has returned isn't because those claims have suddenly been proven correct. Instead, it's because nearly two years of official trailers, screenshots, retailer descriptions, and community map reconstructions have failed to disprove many of the leak's biggest ideas. In several cases, Rockstar's official marketing has actually made them seem more believable.

That's what makes this situation unusual compared to most GTA rumors. Fake leaks generally become less convincing as Rockstar reveals more information because reality eventually exposes their inaccuracies. This particular leak has followed almost the exact opposite path.

After nearly two years, its broadest predictions continue fitting surprisingly well alongside everything Rockstar has officially shown. That doesn't necessarily mean someone genuinely saw an early build of GTA 6, nor does it confirm every detail contained in those original messages. However, as Rockstar continues revealing more of Leonida, this once-forgotten leak has unexpectedly found itself back at the center of the conversation.
