While the modding scene in video games is huge and extensive, there's always a little something special about Pokémon games receiving a treatment. For better or worse, the Pokémon franchise has some of the most dedicated fans and this latest Wii mod is no exception.
Pokémon Rumble: Weekend Edition is an unofficial mod for the Nintendo Wii game, which restores the generations that were missing. In the base game, only first and fourth generation Pokémon are present, but this project populates both Gen 2 and 3, as well as the shiny variations. That's a total of 493 Pokémon. Additionally, the fog that surrounds the stages has been removed.
The Project Pokémon page has instructions on how to install this on hardware and homebrew systems. Note that this mod is only applicable to the USA region and getting it to work on other regions is possible, but requires some extra alterations. The base game is said to remain intact to preserve the drop rarities.
Pokémon Rumble is certainly not the most popular spinoff in the franchise, but these games are light and easygoing. Particularly since the mobile version, Pokémon Rumble Rush, was recently discontinued, this will give diehards something else to cling to. There's also still a Nintendo 3DS version in service, Pokémon Rumble World, but the free-to-play release didn't quite grab us in the same way, as waiting to visit islands often feels more restrictive than it should.
As with a lot of these mods, getting a hold of them might be a time sensitive issue. A few years ago, a complete rework named Pokémon Uranium received huge praise from fans, before Nintendo cracked their belt at it, removing it from known existence. This later happened again to AM2R, a Metroid II fan remake, which was followed by Nintendo's official release on 3DS not much later.
Pokémon Rumble: Weekend Edition looks like another lovingly recreated hit of nostalgia. Modding is pretty cool.
