The world of fear has just changed again. Capcom has released the second trailer for Resident Evil Requiem. The first trailer was shown at Summer Game Fest earlier this year and was a big hit. This latest announcement, which was shown at Gamescom, was billed as one of the show's last big moments, and it both shocked and interested people.
The trailer strikes a good mix between dramatic tension and gameplay clips, giving us a sneak peek at a story filled with secrets, paranoia, and the unsettling feeling that nothing is what it seems to be. The video starts in the Renwood Hotel, which is a creepy, run-down place. For longtime fans, the way it looks reminds them of the gothic architecture of the first Resident Evil house and the creepy shadows of Resident Evil 2.

Being at her computer, Grace Ashcroft, becomes the lens through which a lot of the stress moves. Alyssa, Grace's mother, said something that makes it sound like Grace is always online, always typing, and always looking. That constant use of technology might not just be a teen habit; it could be a key part of the puzzle in the story.
The next phone call makes things even stranger. Someone is calling out "Miss Ashcroft." The caller doesn't say for sure if they are looking for Alyssa or Grace. This lack of clarity leads to guesswork. There are hints in the trailer that Grace is also being targeted, not just her mother. This brings up questions of secret power and importance. This reading is made stronger by Alyssa's anxiety.
The way she looks out the window over and over and her watchful, almost desperate tone make it sound like she knows something she doesn't want to share. When biohazards break out in the world, keeping quiet can be just as dangerous as the virus itself. After that, there is a silence. Things get tense, the lights go out, and Alyssa says, "They're coming".
The line is scary because it confirms that someone is after them without saying who they are. Cultists? Agents? A new type of biological weapon? Moving quickly through dark hallways makes me think of how suffocating it was in Resident Evil Outbreak. It also gives me a new feeling: the real fear isn't quite visible yet.
There are short breaks in the story for gameplay scenes. With a gun in her hand, Alyssa leads Grace through narrow halls and an antique-filled bar. The rooms look old-fashioned because they are filled with gramophones and other items that remind us of the survival horror roots of the series. Capcom has always taken care with how the environments look, and each frame in this game feels like a clue that leads to hidden secrets.
Soon after, the most unsettling scene in the trailer shows up: a guy in a hood with the faint outline of a white collar underneath. The detail is very clear. Was he once a worker who died and then came back to life by an unknown pathogen? Could Requiem be bringing in a new type of virus that brings the dead back to life in ways that have never been seen before? The title for the game, "Nightmare for the living, requiem for the dead," makes it hard to rule out the idea.

What comes next is pure human weakness. After a fierce fight, Alyssa and Grace are shaking and gasping for air as they try to get back on their feet. Their conversation is full of secrets, as if Alyssa knows what will happen but doesn't want to tell Grace.
It's an old Resident Evil trick to keep the story alive by not telling the character (and, by extension, the player) things. It works here because the acts are pretty close to real life. The moment is scarier than any monster reveal because people are hyperventilating, whispering reassurances, and making promises through tears.
The last few seconds show what it costs to be quiet. It's unclear on purpose what will happen to Alyssa. The cut makes me think of an illness, a sacrifice, or something much worse. Does Alyssa feel like she needs to protect her daughter from outside danger, or is she afraid of something inside herself?
Even with all the fear, one truth stands out. Resident Evil Requiem is turning out to be one of Capcom's most complex story projects in years. The series has always had a good mix of scary and sad stories about real people. But this trailer makes me think of a story with two main characters: a mother and a daughter, a guardian and a target, and the living and the dead.
Even though there isn't a release date yet, demos are being shown at Gamescom and other industry events, so first opinions are starting to come out. As embargoes lift in the next few weeks, more information should become available, but Capcom hasn't said when the next reveal will happen, as usual. In the past, October has been a great month for Resident Evil, and rumors are building that there might be another showcase then.
The mystery will not be solved until that time. Resident Evil Requiem is more than just a survival horror game. It offers clues that don't lead anywhere, shadows that don't come from anywhere, and a nagging feeling that the dead aren't the only ones to be afraid of.
