Smite to Bring Cosmic Entity Cthulhu to their Godly Roster

H.P. Lovecraft's monstrous 'Great Old One' joins the ranks of Hi-Rez's popular MOBA.

Smite, Hi-Rez's popular mythological MOBA, has announced a new playable character who is none other than the monstrous squid being, Cthulhu. Although Cthulhu has been featured in many memes and inspired countless stories and video games, not many people know just who this destroyer of worlds is.

Fortunately, this seems to be the overall goal of Smite, to teach players about less popular gods and goddesses. Although the game features well known characters such as Zeus and Horus, the roster is filled with godly beings from 15 different pantheons, rich with lore so that players can learn a sort of mythology lesson while playing the game, if they so choose.

Cthulhu first appeared in 1928, in an issue of Weird Tales, a fantasy and horror magazine that consistently debuted new monsters to entertain its readers. Cthulhu is a slumbering creature that resides below the Pacific Ocean, in the sunken city of R'Lyeh. Although Cthulhu is not technically a god, his powers of influence allowed him to invade the dreams of humans and create a cult worshipping of this alien being. These worshippers eagerly await the day that Cthulhu awakes from his sleep to take his place as ruler of this world. In the case of Smite, it seems that Cthulhu is awake, and ready to fight his way to the top and rule over gods and humans alike.

The addition of Cthulhu also brings with it a new pantheon, which has been dubbed the Great Old Ones. The Great Old Ones are a group of powerful beings created by H.P. Lovecraft, and Cthulhu is probably the best known of all of these creatures. The beggining of this new pantheon hints that Smite may be adding more of Lovecraft's creations in the future, despite the fact that many of these characters are unknown to mainstream players.

Personally, I have always enjoyed the addition of lesser known gods to Smite's already excessive roster, mainly because it gives me a chance to learn more about the mythology and culture of civilizations other than my own, even if they are no longer around. Smite has been a favorite of the MOBA community since its debut in 2014, and this part history, part mythology lesson of a game continues to get new heroes and skins because of its continuing popularity.

Are you a fan of Smite? What do you think of the addition of Cthulhu among the ranks of other favorite gods like Thor and Hercules? What do you enjoy most about Smite? Let us know in the comments!! To watch the minute long reveal of Cthulhu's addition to Smite, visit here.

Smite is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, XBox One, and Nintendo Switch.
