With exciting announcements, Final Fantasy IX's 25th anniversary celebration has formally started. Square Enix has taken initiatives to honor this famous RPG as 2025, 25 years after the game's first release, approaches. The announcement from Square Enix fueled interest in the long-awaited Final Fantasy IX Remake. It's still unclear whether or not we'll see it this year. For now, let's look at what has been revealed so far.
Honoring Final Fantasy IX, Square Enix has created a specific website advertising several initiatives set to launch in the next months. Final Fantasy IX was released on July 7, 2000, and it still holds a very special place in the hearts of fans. Square Enix plans to honor its legacy with a range of unique content and collaborations. However, the rumor about the Final Fantasy IX Remake is still unclear since Square Enix has only mentioned that the anniversary of the game will see releases of various initiatives, including new products. We can assume that by new products, they also meant the Remake.
One of the main events mentioned on the Final Fantasy IX website appears to be a special lottery. Though specifics are still pending, this could be an opportunity for fans to get exclusive products or attend an event. Given that the anniversary site is mostly in Japanese, some of these activities will most likely be limited to Japan. The release of a Final Fantasy IX picture book titled "Picture Book: Vivi and Grandpa on the Day of Departure" is among the most pleasant news. The book, scheduled for July 2, 2025, will explore Vivi Orunitia's early beginnings, one of the most cherished characters in the Final Fantasy series.
The narrative, written by Kazuhiko Aoki and illustrated by Toshiyuki Itahana, follows Vivi's stay with Grandpa Quan before the events of Final Fantasy IX. The official description reads: "This is an original picture book for Final Fantasy IX. Vivi arrives before Grandpa Quan, who is attempting to perfect the art of cooking. Food is emptiness, quote-unquote. The unusual life of a boy who fell from the sky and a master who lives alone—a prelude depicting the days leading up to Vivi's departure." The book costs ¥1,320 and will feature magnificent artwork and information about Vivi's backstory, making it an interesting addition to Final Fantasy IX lore.
Square Enix has announced a collaboration with Japanese eyewear manufacturer Zoff, which will allow fans of Final Fantasy IX to show their love of the game. Three versions of Final Fantasy IX-themed glasses will be offered, each with a limited-edition cleaning cloth and box with game-inspired patterns. Online reservations will begin in early July 2025. In addition, certain Zoff stores will have fitting areas where customers can try on the spectacles in person, as well as original capsule toys. Given that this partnership has just been announced in Japan, international availability is questionable.
Fans of collectible figures will be delighted to learn that Square Enix will release new Final Fantasy IX figures of Zidane and Garnet. These extremely detailed, artistically sculpted figures (each costing ¥6,900) will remain immobile, making them ideal for exhibition. Given the game's undying popularity, these figures are likely to be in high demand as they bring back memories of Final Fantasy IX toys made in the early 2000s.
There is Jewelry too, and Final Fantasy IX fans alike may look forward to a new silver pendant based on Garnet's famous design. The pendant shows the Alexandria crest in pure metal with a cubic zirconia bead. While the price has yet to be announced, this piece is sure to be a stunning and one-of-a-kind tribute to the game.
For fans of cuddly treasures, a new collection of Final Fantasy IX plushies is on the way. The collection will contain Zidane, Vivi, and Garnet (wearing her iconic white mage hood). Steiner, Quina Amarant, Freya, Beatrix, and Kuja, the whole cast, will be available as plush toys, making this one of the most comprehensive Final Fantasy IX plush collections ever published.
Music lovers rejoice! A special 25th anniversary vinyl of Final Fantasy IX, Timeless Tale, will be published on July 9, 2025. This vinyl will include a newly recorded version of Melodies of Life, Final Fantasy IX's classic theme music. Toshiyuki Itahana will create brand-new artwork for the record sleeve, and famed Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu will provide liner notes. To make the music more accessible, a digital download code will be provided with each record purchase. The record will go for ¥4,900 and will most likely be available for international purchase through import stores.
While Square Enix has yet to formally confirm a Final Fantasy IX remake, rumors have been circulating for several years. Furthermore, an animated Final Fantasy IX series was supposedly in the works; however, details on that project have been limited. With Final Fantasy IX's 25th anniversary approaching in 2025, it appears that now is the ideal time for Square Enix to announce the highly anticipated remake. If Square Enix plans to revisit Final Fantasy IX extensively, an official announcement could be on the way.
The Final Fantasy IX 25th anniversary celebration is building up to be a thrilling occasion for fans. While no formal announcement of a Final Fantasy IX Remake has been made, the continued celebration implies that Square Enix still considers Final Fantasy IX an essential part of the franchise. If an announcement is forthcoming, July 7, 2025, would be an ideal time.
