Even though Sony mentioned last year that they wanted to release as many PlayStation games as possible on PC to reach out to more gamers, it appears that PlayStation’s approach to releasing their games on PC has taken a different turn. These could all be speculations, but given Marvel's Spider-Man 2 lackluster PC release, these speculations are growing stronger. This will be related to perhaps witnessing PlayStation take a very different turn than many had anticipated.
A new rumor has surfaced that Demon's Souls will not be ported to PC at the moment and probably never will be. That’s not it. Gran Turismo 7, too, will never be released on PC, either. Therefore, we assume that PlayStation will actually choose which games are released on PC. If these rumors were to be the case, we believe PlayStation might really have taken a different stance on the approach of reaching out to as many PC gamers as possible with their games.
As mentioned, these are still speculations. Sony knows when they look at God of War 2018 and Hell Divers and how they made a lot of money on PC with the right titles. Sony regards PlayStation as a platform with very high-value exclusives, and understands that they are currently the leading company in the console space.
From a logical perspective, they are no longer in rivalry with Xbox. They no longer face competition from Xbox, and the upcoming console generation might not try to compete with them. Of course, we'll have to wait and see after the launch of Xbox Prime, but Xbox is no longer in the field in terms of pressing PlayStation or making any movements.
The most crucial point is that gaming on a PC differs from gaming on a console. It is very different. Console gaming is pretty simple. It simply functions and is better optimized. If this is the case, switching from Xbox to PlayStation is generally a much more feasible option for console gamers than switching to a PC.
While building a decent gaming PC is expensive, some gamers may switch to PCs, but most gamers will switch from Xbox to PlayStation. Therefore, they are now dealing with a much bigger volume of gamers, which translates into a higher volume of sales when a large number of individuals switch from one platform—the Xbox platform—to the PlayStation platform.
Because of the new players entering their ecosystem and the fact that they will no longer have a monopoly but will instead be the only high-end console platform available, PlayStation may act as though they don't need to port their games to other platforms so quickly. This is clearly sad for those who have been waiting for some of the PlayStation exclusives to come on PC, but obviously, Sony has different ideas.
