Sony and Microsoft Announce Partnership with Game Streaming and Cloud Services

In a surprise announcement, Sony and Microsoft are joining forces to help usher in a new future of game streaming and other services.

The 2 companies:

“will explore joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure to support their respective game and content-streaming services.” Furthermore, Microsoft Azure’s datacenter solutions are said to be used for game and other streaming services for Sony. “By working together, the companies aim to deliver more enhanced entertainment experiences for their worldwide customers,” said the news release.

It's too early to know how the partnership could change the relationship between Sony and Microsoft. Both companies are still competitors but it could be an indicator that both Sony and Microsoft are looking into creating a focus on streaming instead of consoles. Microsoft has been vocal about Project xCloud while Sony has been actively supporting PlayStation Now.
