Square Enix Lining Up 2 Final Fantasy Remakes For Switch 2

Is Square Enix planning Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy IX Remakes for the Switch 2 debut?

It has been rumored that Final Fantasy Tactics has been being developed concurrently with the Final Fantasy IX Remake. According to Yoshi P, Creative Studio 3 was reported to be engaged in two undisclosed projects in June of last year, and news of their announcements was imminent. Among these games, we are aware of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension, which was developed by Square Enix-CS3 and Mistwalker, and both Hironobu Sakaguchi and Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi P) were involved in the project.

After working on Final Fantasy XIV and XVI, producer and director Naoki Yoshida expressed his desire to see a Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster or possibly create a whole new FF Tactics game. Considering Square Enix-CS3's extensive experience in immersive fantasy and medieval settings, this may easily work in the end. Additionally, the director of Final Fantasy XII and Tactics, Yasumi Matsuno, has worked closely with them on numerous projects.

Many of Yasumi Matsuno’s collaborations with Final Fantasy XIV have been noteworthy, including the game's antagonist narrative and raids. Given that Yasumi Matsuno occasionally returns to Square Enix to collaborate with other developers and that the two directors appear to have a solid working understanding when it comes to game development, it would not be surprising in the least if Yoshi P and Yasumi Matsuno worked together in developing the Final Fantasy Tactics Remake.

Considering how modest this project is—even the IX remake is larger—and how rumored these games tend to be in comparison to larger endeavors like the VII Remake, I truly don't believe it will be long before we see this game. Since FANTASIAN received a significant makeover and was brought to PC and current platforms, assuming that one of these games has already been revealed and launched and that the other is about to follow suit, it would make sense for the two projects they are now working on to be on a lesser scale. This Tactics Remaster seems to fit the bill well; therefore, it's likely it was given to them.

In the end, it all comes to Square Enix and their current corporate shift. They've been struggling to make a profit, even with their most popular games like Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Games that were expected to be Square Enix's bread and butter are now barely making ends meet after deducting development costs. Therefore, I anticipate that Square Enix will have a rather dry year in 2025.

Both Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy IX Remake may have been scheduled for announcements around the end of last year or perhaps just this year. But given what's going on at Square Enix, a new multiplatform approach like this may have altered the designs of most titles. Square Enix is surely working on something new since their current game pipeline isn't looking great. They are likely lining up these titles for Nintendo Switch 2 and judging by the initial leaks and Yoshi P’s statement, these games are now in the final stages and are practically waiting to be launched.
