Steam AI Tag Sparks Industry Debate

A viral clash over AI transparency sends shockwaves through the gaming industry.

When people talked about Steam's "Made With AI" tag on social media sites very quickly, it caused an unexpected uproar in the game community. A comment on X arguing that digital storefronts should get rid of all AI labels set off the spark, according to the sources.

The message spread quickly and caught the attention of Epic Games' founder and CEO. They agreed that tags like these were no longer needed in a world where AI-assisted development is quickly becoming the rule. His thinking pointed to a future where almost all games use some kind of generative AI, making the market so full of them that disclosure might become unnecessary in the long run.

Millions of people watched the exchange and weighed in on whether consumers would gain from an AI disclosure system. At the moment, Steam's tag only tells buyers that AI helped with some part of the production, like synthesizing voices, making assets, or helping with writing.

Sources say that games like Arc Raiders already use AI-generated NPC sounds, and the game still sells a lot, even though there are heated arguments about it online. In this case, transparency has not slowed down efficiency. Instead, Steam focuses on being clear with customers by giving them more information instead of less, even if that tag sometimes makes negative assumptions.

Since the argument got stronger, people started to wonder what would happen to disclosure in the future. If most studios start using AI for different jobs soon, would the label become so common that it stops being useful?

Some creators have already gone the other way, happily saying "no AI used" in the credits to show that they are real.

Also, people who look at abstract art online often think that it is computer-generated content, which adds to the misunderstanding. Because of the growing uncertainty, being open is more important than ever, even though some big names in the industry say that mentioning AI involvement might soon seem old-fashioned.

The disagreement between Steam and Epic, which seems to be moving toward a more AI-friendly identity, brings up an interesting question: Will the next generation of digital storefronts need more labels, or none at all?
