The Mortuary Assistant Arrives to Haunt PCs Everywhere

Half mortuary simulator, half ghost story, all terrifying.

In The Mortuary Assistant, you play Rebecca Owens, a recent degree graduate who works at River Fields mortuary. Part simulator, part psychological and supernatural horror, The Mortuary Assistant is made by one-man development studio DarkStone Digital and published by DreadXP.

Brian Clarke, the mind behind The Mortuary Assistant, describes the experience of developing a game solo as "deeply personal... it's exhilarating and terrifying". His worries have been eased by a demo for the game receiving a positive reception in October 2021, with hype building at PAX East 2022.

Unfortunately for Rebecca and the player, not every cadaver admitted to the morgue is as soulless as it appears, "you must balance your mortuary tasks while hunting for clues" behind the origins of the ghosts and demons haunting River Fields. Between conducting exorcisms and occult rituals to rid the mortuary of unwelcome visitors, the player must also attend to the duties of a normal, unhaunted, mortuary assistant. These include preparing the bodies for burial by "making incisions on the dead, draining corpses of residual blood, retrieving bodies from cold storage, and conducting embalmings."

The Mortuary Assistant is out now on PC through Steam and Itch.io.
