The Puzzle-Adventure Game Myst is Getting A Modern Remake

A classic first person puzzle game from nearly 30 years ago is returning with brand new graphics and other upgrades.

With the popularity of classic remakes steadily growing in recent years, many developers have jumped on the bandwagon to recreate some of their best selling titles. Among these are games such as Spyro (original release 1998), Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (2003), and Final Fantasy 7 (1997), just to name a few.

Recently, fans of puzzle-adventure games have been informed of a new remake in the works for a classic game known as Myst (1993). The title allows players to dive into a unique world where anything is possible through a special book, which serves as a portal to the land of Myst.

When it first debuted, the game left a huge impact on the history of gaming, expanding the possibilities of what players could do in games. The uniquely captivating puzzles were the first of their time, and many modern puzzle games have adapted the style from Myst.

In a recent announcement trailer from Cyan Worlds, the original developers of Myst, players were told that the classic title was "Coming Soon" to PC and Oculus Quest. The remake "completely reimagines" the world of Myst for modern consoles, including updated visuals, audio and interactions, as well as puzzle randomization.

Myst, Remake, 2020

Although this announcement doesn't go into much detail about the remake, fans are nevertheless excited to see Myst step back into the spotlight after so many years. Because of the fact that Cyan didn't reveal the game as platform specific, it is possible that players will see the Myst remake coming to other consoles as the game develops.

2020 has been an interesting year for the Myst franchise, and this remake is only the latest in a list of new developments. In April, the Hulu adaptation of the title officially picked up a writer, and a documentarian began a Kickstarter in order to create a documentary about Myst.

Assuming that Cyan Worlds has no other announcements before 2021, an updated Myst title would be a fitting end to 2020. Even though players are unsure if the title will stick with its point-and-click style that it launched with, it may take inspiration from Myst's successors to improve gameplay.

Because the Myst remake does not currently have a release date, fans will have to keep their ears open for another announcement from Cyan as the game finishes production. But for the moment, the original Myst is on sale via Steam for $2.99, so anyone interested in the remake should take this opportunity to experience the original game that started it all.
