It’s official. Developer Lizardcube’s remaster of the Wonder Boy series has gone gold on all consoles. Taken from their Twitter post, Lizardcube announced that their game is set for a release on April 18, 2017.

For those not familiar with the term “Gone Gold” it simply means that the game is rated to be sufficient enough to be shipped to stores for purchase. Basically, it means the game is finished, it has received the go-ahead from the developer and will be heading to stores soon.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is the remastered version of Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap that originally appeared on SEGA’s first console, the Master System. All areas of the game have been carefully retouched, including everything from hand-drawn graphics to remastered versions of the original soundtrack.

The game’s synopsis takes place right after the events of Wonder Boy in Monster Land on the Master System. Now, players take control of a character that upon beating the Mecha Dragon, has become cursed and is turned into a Lizard-Man. Players must journey across the world to defeat all the dragons of the land to become human again. In your adventures, players will explore far lands, gain new animal forms and learn new abilities to defeat your foes such as: using bow and arrows, spitting fireballs, flying in the air, swimming under water, climbing walls, use powerful sword attacks and the ability to purchase upgrades to improve weapons and armor. Each of these abilities are controlled by each animal form, the Lizard-Man, Mouse-Man, Piranha-Man, Hawk Man, and Lion-Man. By putting two and two together, one can imagine which characters control what powers.

Probably one of the coolest features that is implemented in the game, is the ability to turn the graphics and sound into 8-bit on the fly (Which can be seen in action here). One last addition to the game before developers wrapped up production is the ability to take control of a new hero, Wonder Girl.
