In a surprisingly turn of events Yooka-Laylee is getting multiplayer, both competitive and cooperative.
Playtonic Games and publisher Team17 confirmed that the spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie will feature 8 arcade games. Players can play the games alone in a bid to earn a high score on the leaderboards or 4-player local battles.
"Compete in the Glaciators brawler arena to collect the most quills, race to the finish line in Kartos Karting, fight for the flag in Blag the Flag, blast away the enemies in shoot-em-up Gun-let Run and traverse both Jobstacle Course and Hurdle Hijinx, plus more! These are just some of the exciting games you can expect to find in Rextro’s Arcade."
Playtonic also confirmed that the campaign will support cooperative play with one more player. The second player will take control of the "Bee Team" and will be able to grab quills and collect and store butterflies when Yooka-Laylee need health or energy. The second player can also help players by disarming traps.
Players will be able to collect "special play coins" in the campaign which can be used to power up arcade cabinets located within the mysterious book worlds for a chance for some "sought-after pagies."
Yooka-Laylee is set to release for Xbox One, PS4, PC, Mac, and Linux on April 11th for $39.99. A Switch version has been confirmed but the Wii U version has been canceled.
